Line-up 2011

The band

“Some funk and fusion mixed with a lot of jazz and a pinch of soul in a latin shaker”. That’s the best way to describe the

musical style of Cada Dia. The band started in 2008 with a repertoire mainly filled of songs from artists such as Incognito,

Spyro Gyra, Down to the Bone, Level 42 and Tania Maria. Although playing well-known songs, Cada Dia could never be

defined as a regular cover-band since this formation had a unique sound. Whilst a lot of those covers are still on the play-list,

nowadays Cada Dia is adding more and more off their own compositions created by their vibraphone player Hans Kerkhoff:

catchy tunes arranged in the typical Cada Dia-style.

Konkie Halmeyer - steel-pan

Nippy Noya - percussion

The sound

What makes the sound that’s so characteristic of Cada Dia? Well, primarily they want their music to make you happy, even

their ballads are not sad. Although the band has, among others, influences from jazz-music, they never get lost in endless

solos. The focus is always the song. Without a keyboard, the band line-up isn’t ordinary. For them, this guarantees the

transparency of the music and leaves space for individual as well as collective qualities. Listen to the horn-section. The

chords they play as a unit are arranged in a consistent way, which makes such a recognisably rich sound. Certainly the

singer has her moments in front of the band, but more often she’s a part of the whole and merges with one or more

instrumentalists who of course also have their “moments of fame” now and then. The rhythm-section creates their own style

using different elements. Playing a salsa tune for instance, because of them it’s never just “ordinary” latin. The new Cada Dia

originals are typically based on a couple of different tunes brought together in one song: an easy musical jig-saw that’s

always fun to listen to. This is the particular style Cada Dia is developing and fine-tuning day by day.

Program notes

The project “Latin Sun” is a concert-series in which the band makes latin music more accessible to a larger audience, by

combining this style of music with popular influences. As well as a few covers of well-known songs, the band adds a huge

bundle of brand-new Cada Dia originals to this show. All have one important thing in common: they’re arranged in the

typical and unique Cada Dia style. The “sunny” performance of Cada Dia will guarantee a warm smile on the faces of the

audience regardless of their age or nationality.

Music is all about emotion, although according to Cada Dia you may forget sadness for this occasion.

Just stick to happiness!

Latin Sun tour

During 2011 Cada Dia will be offering this concert program to venues in The Netherlands and countries listed in the following

schedule.

Period Location

January 2011 to June 2011 The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

August 2011 Spain and Portugal

September 2011 Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire

October 2011 and November 2011 The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

December 2011 The Netherlands

Early years

At the age of 17 I got my first gig that didn’t cost me money. It was for a wedding, and I played the drums in a Dixieland

band. In that same year I became the mallet player/percussionist with the TRO (an orchestra which did the music for a Dutch

theatre show). The next year I didn’t only just play the drums, but I wrote the arrangements too and I even became the

bandleader. For these performances I wrote more than 300 songs and arrangements for 13 different shows.

Writing

And the writing still goes on and on and on and ...... I am proud to mention that some of my arrangements have even been

played by the German NDR and SWF Big Bands. However, I haven’t only written for big bands, I have also done some

arranging and composing for special theatre projects, marching bands and percussion groups, commercials and popular

music. I combine these experiences in my arrangements and compositions for Cada Dia.

Playing

I have shared the stage with Lee Towers and Anita Meyer, national symbols in their best days and still great entertainers.

Playing jazz on vibes there are some musicians I’ve performed with who I respect a great deal. I have to mention Hammond-

freak John Hondorp (teacher at the conservatory), his colleague Ruud Ouwehand who played the bass with many world-

famous musicians, Jan Wessels (trumpet and flugelhorn-soloist with the Metropole Orchestra), Rob Horsting (pianist and

arranger for the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw), Ferdinand Povel (dedicated to the tenor-saxophone and winner of

the prestigious Boy Edgar-price in 2011) and Edison-Award winning Swing Singer Lils Mackintosh. And of course there are

the respected band-members of Cada Dia, including the world-famous Nippy Noya, who has become our regular additional

percussionist.

Bandleaders Biography

The first happening of any importance was my

graduating at the Conservatory of Zwolle, where I

should have been busy with classical music but

where in fact jazz became the most important

thing in my musical life. After being in several

bands playing a variety of instruments such as

drums, bass, keys, trumpet and saxophone, I

concentrated on the vibraphone, arranging and

composing.

Drop That Brick

Is it an appeal to stop violence or a call for strike? You’ll never know, because this tune is an instrumental one. No further

explanation, just a strong song.

Isn’t She Lovely

Everybody recognizes this tremendous song only by hearing the first few bars. And because of that Cada Dia has changed

them! Likewise, they have changed the famous last melodic line. This is the only reason for this arrangement. There are no

intentions to improve Stevie Wonders work.

Paradera Highlights

A good example of the jig-saw of various tunes in one song. Even without the

steel-pan added to this recording, the song breathes tropical heat.

Kabamentu

One of the few ballads by Cada Dia. This wonderful flugelhorn feature was

recorded in one single take. Kabamentu means something like “the end”. The

end of what? Thats up to you.

Can’t Slow Down

This cheerful Cada Dia original was written by Helen Ostafew and Hans

Kerkhoff. The first result of their co-operation sets the standard to your

expectations.

Quotes

After a tremendous concert at the Metropool in The Netherlands given by Cada Dia together with the world-class artists

Nippy Noya (percussion) and Konkie Halmeyer (steel-pan), the audience was in ecstasy. The band was truly surprised by the

amount of compliments after more than two-and-a-half ours of non-stop playing.

“Fantastic, what a show!”

“And you’re really just here from Hengelo??”

“What an energy. They just go on and on.”

“I got completely happy when I heard you guys.”

“I was looking forward to seeing Nippy playing, but this was

unexpected. What a great band!”
