2016 ProcessImprovementforConvolutedPTFEHoseThermalExpansion

PROJECTSUMMARY

TECHNICALAPPROACH

ThermalExpansionSolutionswastaskedtoimproveupontheexistingprocessthatParkerStratoflex utilizestothermallyexpandconvolutedPTFEhosesforaerospaceapplications.Keyrequirementsfortheprojectwhereimprovedsafety,reducedproductscrap,increasedprocessrepeatability,andreducedoverallprocesstime.

Anewthermalexpanderwasdesignedtoaddresstheserequirements.Thenewdesignconsistsoffourmainareas:thehose-clampingmechanism,therailsystemwithsupportframe,mandrelswithmandrelcompartments,andtheslidingtrapdoor.

PhaseI• Investigatedcurrentthermalexpanderdesignandprocess.• Developedcriteriatoaddresskeyclientneedsforimprovedsafety,

reducedproductscrapduetoPTFEfolding,increasedprocessrepeatability,andreducedprocesstimeperhose.

• Developedpotentialsolutionsforimprovementtokeyareasofthethermalexpanderandcombineddown-selecteditemsintofinalconceptualdesign.

PhaseII• Fabricatedtestmandrelstodeterminebestmandrelshapetoexpand

hoses.• Developeddetaileddesignwithsuggestedimprovementsfromclient.• Establishedproceduresforassembly,operation,andmaintenanceof

newthermalexpanderdesign.• Presentedfinalizeddetaileddesignwithrecommendationsforfurther

developmentandautomation.
