ANGRY AT YOU

I. INTRODUCTION: “PROPITIATION” IS A RARELY USED

WORD.

II. DEFINITION:

Propitiation is an action meant to regain someone's favor or make up for something you did wrong. Propitiation comes from a form of the Latin verb "propitiare," which means “to appease.” If you’re doing something in propitiation, that’s your basic goal: to regain favor.

A. TO ATTEMPT TO TURN AWAY ANGER BY

OFFERING A GIFT TO THE

OFFENDED PARTY.

B. SOME EXAMPLES:

• JACOB sending gifts to pacify his brother ESAU. (Gen. 32)

•A HUSBAND placating an offended WIFE.

•A PAGAN worshiper

placating an angry GOD.

III. WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH JESUS AND SALVATION?

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

(LEVITICUS 16)

THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

•The High Priest offered the blood of a GOAT on the MERCY SEAT of the Ark of the Covenant.

•This offering served to forgive the sins of all Israel for a YEAR.

JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS AND SHED HIS BLOOD. 

•Jesus was our HIGH PRIEST - Hebrews 2:17

•Jesus was our SACRIFICE- 1 John 2:2

IV. THE EFFECTS OF PROPITIATION

•God’s JUSTICE is now satisfied.

•God’s WRATH has been turned away.

•God’s MERCY is freely available to anyone who desires it.

V. IMPLICATIONS:

A. WE DON’T HAVE TO LIVE IN FEAR OF GOD. HE

ISN’T ANGRY WITH US.

B. WE SEE THE ABSOLUTE

NECESSITY OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.

C. WE ENJOY THE BLESSING OF

GOD’S MERCY, BECAUSE CHRIST ENDURED GOD’S

WRATH.

D. FOR THOSE WHO REJECT

CHRIST THERE IS NOWHERE ELSE

TO TURN.
