CourseDescriptionThiscourseintroducesascientificframeworktoexploreimportantquestionsinpsychology,neuroscienceandbehaviour.Usingpsychologicalresearchmethodstounderstandlearning,cognition,andsocialpsychology,thiscoursehelpslearnerstodevelopskillstointegrate,evaluateandexamineinformationthatisusefulinappliedsettings.Theintendedlearningoutcomesareto:

• Integrateknowledgefromresearchdesign,learning,cognition,andsocialpsychology• Applythelanguageofpsychologyinreal-worldsettingsandconnectwithcurrentevents• Criticallyevaluatescientificinformation,dataandresearchmethodologies• Discoverhowpsychologicaltheorieshelpassess,predictorchangehumanbehaviour

ANoteAboutNoteTakingStudentsoftenwonder(andworry)abouthowextensivetheirnotesshouldbe.Thishandbookprovidesoutlineswithkeypointsandslidesreproducedfromthewebmodulestoguideyourownnotetaking.Therereallyisnosubstitutefordoingthisyourselftolearnthematerial.If,however,youcanrefertoyournotesandanswerthepracticequestionsthatfollowthehandbookoutlines,youshouldfindyourselfingoodshapefortheweeklyquizzesandtheexamtocome.

ANoteAboutTestsWithpracticequestionsinthishandbook,Pre-QuizandQuizzes,youmightbewondering“whyaretheresomanytests?!”.Thesimpleansweristhattestinghasbeenshowntobethemosteffectivewaytolearninformationinthelongterm.Retrieval-EnhancedLearningManystudentslikelyviewtestingasanegativenecessityoftheircoursesandwouldprefertohaveasfewtestsaspossible.Thinkingabouttestingthiswayisduetoyearsofexperiencingtestsasahigh-stakesassessmentoflearning.Thisisunfortunategiventhefactthattestingimproveslearning.Overthepasthundredyears,researchonthecharacteristicsofhumanlearningandmemoryhasdemonstratedthatpracticetestingenhanceslearningandretentionofinformation(e.g.,Dunloskyetal.,2013;Roediger&Karpicke,2006a).Practicetestingcantakemanyforms.Itcanrefertopracticingyourrecallofinformationbyusingflashcards,completingpracticeproblemsorquestionsinatextbook,orcompletinglow-stakestestsaspartofacourserequirement.ThisprinciplewastheprimarymotivationforredesigningtheMacIntroPsychcoursetohaveweekly,lowstakesquizzes.AnexcellentexampleofthepoweroftestingmemorycomesfromastudybyRoedigerandKarpicke(2006b),whereinundergraduatestudentswerepresentedwithshort,educationallyrelevanttextsforinitialstudy.Followinginitialstudystudentseitherstudiedthematerialagain,ortookapracticetest.Afinaltestwastakenafterashortretentioninterval(5minutes)orlongretentioninterval(2days).Afterashortretentionintervalrestudyingproducedbetterrecallthantesting(81%vs.75%).However,withthelongretentionintervaltestingproducedsignificantlybetterrecallthanrestudying(68%vs.54%).Thus,aftertwodays,performancedeclined27%forstudentswhorestudiedthematerial,butonly7%forstudentsthatpracticedrecall.Interestingly,providingstudentswiththecorrectanswerfeedbackafteratestenhancesthepositiveeffectoftesting.Withfeedback,learnersareabletocorrecterrors,andmaintaintheircorrectresponses.Moreover,takingatestandreviewingfeedbackcanenhancefuturestudysessions.Researchshowsthatwhenastudenttakesatestbeforerestudyingmaterial,theylearnmorefromtherestudyingsessionthaniftheyrestudywithouttakingatestbeforehand(e.g.,Karpicke,2009).Thisiscalledtest-potentiatedlearning.WhydoestestingimproveretentionofinformationandhowcanIuseit?Explanationsforthepositiveeffectsoftestingfocusonhowtheactofretrievalaffectsmemory.Specifically,itissuggestedthatretrievinginformationleadstoanelaborationofmemorytracesandthecreationofadditionalretrievalpaths.Togetherthesechangestomemorysystemsmakeitmorelikelythattheinformationwillbesuccessfullyretrievedagaininthefuture.Thissuggeststhattestingisnotjustanassessmenttool,butalsoaneffectivelearningtool.AsastudentinthiscourseyoucantakeadvantageofretrievalenhancedlearningeachweekinpreparationforyourweeklyQuiz.Thisbeginswithstudyingwebmodulecontentearlyintheweek(e.g.,SundayorMonday).Youcanthenengageinretrievalpracticeasaformofreviewafteryourinitialstudysession.AtthispointyoushouldbereadytocompletethePre-quizandreviewthefeedback(byWednesdayorThursday).Thisgivesyoutheopportunitytotakeadvantageoftest-potentiatedlearningwhenyoureviewcontentagainbeforecompletingyourQuizonFriday.Thissuggestedscheduleofstudying,andincorporationofretrievalpracticewillhelpyoulearnandretainthecoursecontent.Engaginginthisprocesseachweekenhancesyourlong-termmemoryforcoursecontentandthereforeadvancesyourpreparationsforthefinalexam!Suggestedfurtherreading:
