SCCM awards “Excellence in Service for Research/
Quality Improvement ”
A collaborative team effort led by Petra Grami RN of BSLMC and
Dereddi Raja Reddy MD, Critical Care Faculty at BSLMC, won the pres-
tigious Excellence in Service Award for Research & Quality Improve-
ment at the Society of Critical Care Medicine 2017 Congress in Hawaii.
While a growing body of evidence demonstrates benefits of early re-
habilitation for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU, it is very
infrequently prescribed because of multiple perceived barriers. Using
Exercise Physiologists as an innovative method, Grami & Reddy’s team
successfully implemented a quality improvement study showing statis-
tically significant positive outcomes.
Faculty in News!
Congratulations Dr. Lazarus for receiving
the Faculty Awards for Excellence in Patient
Care!
Congratulations Dr. Ayyala for becoming a
member of the Vice Chair Committee on Qual-
ity Improvement and Innovations for the De-
partment of Medicine!

BSLMC ACQUIRES NEW TREATMENT TOOL IN MEDICAL ICU!
Treatment teams within the medical ICU at CHI Baylor St. Luke’s Hospital will soon have a new tool to improve the
care provided to their patients. BSLMC has invested in and is currently installing Decisio Health’s clinical decision sup-
port tool (Decisio) within every bed of the medical ICU and emergency room. Decisio was developed here in Houston
at the University of Texas Health Science Center and Memorial Hermann Hospital where it is used within their shock
trauma ICU. This tool includes a cloud-based software and screens, visible to the treatment team, installed in the pa-
tient room. Decisio’s software uses data gathered from the electronic medical record and directly from treatment
hardware such as ventilators, and then presents the real-time information to providers at the bedside via the in room
monitors. This information can also be accessed via a website and apps on personal devices. The software runs both
diagnostic algorithms and treatment bundles, with the ability to inform the treatment team of clinical changes or if time
sensitive interventions are still pending. In 2015 Decisio attained FDA approval as a medical device, the first of its kind.
Although Decisio has been instituted at other hospitals within the US, BSLMC will be the first medical ICU. The treat-
ment of sepsis and compliance with treatment bundles is one of the main drivers for the application of this tool within
the medical ICU, currently with a plan to study its effect on the treatment and outcomes of this population. Moving
forward Decisio will provide a means of gathering large amounts of data and quickly changing interventions within the
medical ICU, greatly expanding the ability to perform quality improvement and research within the ICU.
Congratulations! New Arrivals

School of Medicine Admissions Committee features
Dr. Philip Alapat
What have you enjoyed most about interviewing Medical school applicants? I have enjoyed
the opportunity to discuss the impressive and diverse accomplishments of our applicants. I am continual-
ly amazed and humbled at the independent and resourceful mindsets of our applicants.
Is there one question that you always ask each applicant that you are interviewing? I ask
each applicant to try to summarize their entire life.-from birth to present– in a couple of minutes. This is obviously a significant chal-
lenge to compress their entire life into a few sentences, but it allows me an opportunity to understand what the applicant views as im-
portant.
Describe one of your best interview sessions from the 2016-2017 cycle.
I don’t think I have any particular ‘best interview session’, but I think the best interview sessions come about when the applicant is able
to convincingly convey excitement about their future in the practice of medicine.
Why did you choose a career in medicine? I found a career in medicine provided me a limitless potential to learn, discover, teach
and provide care such that I wake up each morning with a desire to do more.
The additional facet of the admissions committee that I enjoy is finding a nonstandard applicant who I feel will excel not only at Baylor
College of Medicine but in the future practice of medicine and supporting that applicant in the admissions committee meet-
ing. Page 6

CF Center Site Visit
Page 7
The Maconda Brown O’Connor PhD Adult Cystic Fibrosis
Center at Baylor College of Medicine is one of the largest
adult cystic fibrosis care centers in the country providing
multidisciplinary care to nearly 300 patients aged 18 years
and older. CF care centers across the country are accredit-
ed by the CF Foundation to ensure they have the resources
to provide comprehensive care in line with the CF Founda-
tion Care Guidelines. On March 27th Dr Mary Ellen Klein-
henz, adult CF center director at UCSF, visited the Baylor
adult CF care center to conduct an accreditation visit. Dur-
ing this visit she met with learners, colleagues as well as inpa-
tient and outpatient leadership. She was also able to tour
inpatient and outpatient facilities. Pictured above is a lunch-
eon with Dr Kleinhenz, the outpatient care team and select
members of the inpatient care team. Overall, the visit was a
success and Dr Keinhenz was very complimentary of all
those involved. Dr Tara Lynn Barto, interim director of the
Baylor adult CF care center, and her team will receive a final
report later this year after review by the CF Foundation.
Congratulations to Dr. Fidaa Shaib and
Baylor St. Luke’s Sleep team!
Baylor St. Luke’s Center for Sleep
Medicine has received a 5 year re-
accreditation by the AASM as a
Sleep Center and Home Sleep Ap-
nea Testing facility. They re-
ceived no citations and a site visit
was not required despite the re-
cent transition.
