TRANSCRIPT
As the year is coming to close, so is my time as serving as President of the Kansas Chapter. It’s been a wonderful experience to serve in this role and I truly appreciate the opportunity. At every meeting, conference or roundtable I learned something new in the vast spectrum of the Public Works profession. Recent things that come to mind are how cities are using compressed natural gas in fleet operations, alternatives of roadway subgrade treatment, and policies to control the proliferation of telecommunication companies in the right-of-way. Innovations in building and maintaining infrastructures are always evolving and I appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained through APWA to keep up with these changes.
Transitioning to 2017 I would like to welcome the new members to the Executive Committee:
Mike Stringer, KDOT Local Projects (LTAP/KDOT Liaison)
Richard Buller, City of Hutchinson (Membership Chair)
Jason Peek, City of Topeka (Legislature and League Representative Chair)
Special thanks to all the members that serve on committees and to the departing executive committee members for their leadership and years of service:
Chuck Bartlett (6 years)
Ron Seitz (5 years)
Justin Erickson (4 years)
In closing, the greatest strength of the chapter are the members. This is a remarkable group affecting real change and progress, even faced with increasingly strained resources. Take pride in that. I am confident the good work will continue. I encourage all of our members to look around their workplaces and identify someone who you think would benefit from being a member of our chapter. Share your experiences and knowledge you have gained from APWA, and promote our organization.
I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

2017 Future City Competition - Great Plains Regional Update
The APWA Kansas Chapter will again be sponsoring the Future City Great Plains Regional competition held which will be held at Kansas State University on January 21, 2017, in the newly finished engineering building. The theme for this year's competition is "Power of Public Space", challenging students to imagine a distributed network of multiuse public spaces in their cities.
Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineering mentor to plan cities using SimCity software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at the Great Plains Regional Competition. Regional winners represent their region at the National Finals in Washington, D.C.
The Great Plains Region has held a regional competition for twelve years and consists of schools from Kansas, Colorado and Missouri with over 400 students participating last year. The competition is a great educational outreach opportunity for chapter members to get involved.
On average the competition takes 75-100 STEM background volunteers to put on the day of events and judges are needed to review both the models and preliminary rounds of presentations. No prior experience or expertise is required to be a judge and the time commitment is limited to just the morning of Saturday January 21st. If individuals or company groups would like to volunteer as a judge please send an email to futurecityks@gmail.com.
Learn more about the Future City Competition at: http://futurecity.org/greatplains. There you will find detailed information about the competition, photos of past winners, information on how to get involved, informational videos, etc. It is a wonderful website that illustrates the competition activities from beginning to end.
