OBJECTIVES

High-tech irrigation & soil salinity management research study in Yuma County, Arizona

EVAPOTRANSPIRATION & SALINITY MONITORED AT MULTIPLE SCALES

Quantitative Assessments of Water and Salt Balance for Cropping Systems in the Lower Colorado River Region

USDA-ARS Arid Land Ag Research Center• Dr. Andy French• Dr. Clinton Williams• Dr. Eduardo Bautista

• Satellite Imagery (10 – 30 m)• Landsat• Sentinel 2a/2b• VENuS• ECOSTRESS

• Aerial Imagery (cm – m)• UAV sensors

• Field Scale• Eddy Covariance • Large Aperture Scintillometers • Conductance Survey (EM-38)

• Point Measurements• Sensors and data loggers• Soil samples and analysis

Ongoing data collection and analysis aimed at understanding water and salt balance for multiple cropping rotations during the annual production cycle

• Quantitatively track water use and soil salt balance to determine beneficial useacross typical crop production systems and rotations over a 3 year period.

• Develop mobile apps that take into account actual crop ET and required leaching coefficient to assist growers with irrigation decisions.
