The Legend of The Village Idiot, Oskar the Ostrich
The Legendary VILLAGE IDIOT Oskar the ostrich was
hatched in the backyard of a Durban shabeen in the
decadent 1980s.
Hand raised and bottle-fed a diet of mampoer and whisky
by the local spirit distillers, OSKAR naturally grew into a
raging bar �y, whose antics are still revered and spoken
about fondly to this day.
The life of the Durban party scene, gaining a reputation as
a general ru�an, relentless womaniser, and joker – who on
more than one occasion got into bar brawls over his
alleged long neck drink-stealing technique. In such battles
his speciality was the �ying “Karate Kid” round house kick,
which was as e�ective as it was spectacular.
Being the free-spirit that he was, OSKAR decided to leave
Durban to sample the Cape Town Nightlife after losing a
drunken bet that he could make it there on foot,
racing his friend Blikkies on his XT 500, in under 10 hours –
the numerous paternity suits he was facing was probably
also a contributing factor to his decision to re-locate
unexpectedly.
OSKAR surfaced a few weeks later in a friend’s Loop Street
bar, where his heavy drinking sessions, idiotic antics and
outrageous dance moves, which were often mistaken as
primitive mating rituals, caused his legend to grow.
It is rumored that, in this very spot where you’re standing
right now, OSKAR found his blissful place in the sun. Legend
also has it that he still makes an appearance from time to
time, in the shadows, when the music is right and the
whisky is �owing.
So if your head feels a little sore in the morning after
having a good time, it might have been the booze … but
maybe, just maybe, it was a roundhouse kick from OSKAR
as well.
