Shaun of the dead

Genre: Zombie Thriller

Opening Sequence Conventions: The opening scene opens with a close-up shot of themain protagonist looking as if he is shocked.

It then leads to a black screen showing that an event is about to occur, it creates tension for the audience.

This dolly pan is used for comical purposes after getting the audience prepared for something frightening to happen.

This is stereotyping women as being robot like creatures that have low waged jobs, they are all working in unison to further the fact that all women are the same.

This is portraying men as workers, they are all waiting for a bus in a business like manner. The colored boy is singled out, this may be a stereotype of his ethnicity because he looks more clueless in comparison to the working men.

This is establishing the movies main theme which is ‘the walking dead/zombies’.

This is creating a sense of danger and fear, it builds tension to get the audience feel more edgy.

This shot is establishing the two main characters, it is stereotyping them as lazy, dirty slobs. It also sets the comical theme of the movie.

This scene furthers the stereotypes of men. Mise en scene is used to express this stereotype as the backdrops and clothes are dirty.

Warm Bodies

Genre: Romantic Killer Thriller

Opening Sequence Conventions: It establishes the main Protagonist and sets the movies theme of zombies and its romantic thriller genre

This scene is setting up the audience to prepare for an Apocalypse movie, the dialogue is setting up the comical conventions for the movie. The saturated tone adds a darker tone to the scene.

This scene is showing a flashback. They have used a sepia tone and choppy frames to create this effect! The sepia tone adds a vintage horror theme to the scene.

The lady in this scene rushes towards the glass panel, it causes the audience to jump. This creates an fear filled atmosphere for the audience to experience! Her makeup makes this scene more convincing and scary.

This scene is showing R’s thought process, it gives a short summary of what could have happened to cause the apocalypse. It also makes it clear that they are living in a post-apocalyptic world.

This shows the location of the scene, it implies to the audience what to expect form the movie. To further, the red jumper the protagonist is wearing is a red hoodie causing him to stand out in the mainly grey dominated color scheme

This scene is another Flashback showing the audience what has become of the Airport. The brighter colors used continue to establish the post apocalyptic world the movie is set in.

His red jumper could also signify danger (or his hunger for human brains!!)

The man tears his face off to put the audience in a state of fear and disgust. It builds up tension to lead the audience onto believing something scary or frightening is about to happen. The characters make up instantly establishes him as a zombie, which continues to introduce the narrative in a visual way.The low frequency sound and the flickering noise of a light makes the audience to feel fear.

This shot reverse shots makes the audience see a more human side to the zombies, this helps the audience to calm down and take a break from the slightly gory and zombie infested scene. It also foreshadows the fact that zombies (in this movie) have the ability to keep human qualities. It also sets the comical theme for the movie!

This shows the vagueness of the zombies thought process. It could also be a counter counter-typical example of how men are seen in movies as they are usually seen as quick thinking and well dressed.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Opening Sequence Conventions: The sequence opens with a simple black and white text, the music in the background is heavy and bassy.

The dulled out colors and low key lighting already causes the audience to feel tension. The music starts to pick up, making the audience start to feel excitement!

The cold grey blocked writing and the black background establishes that the movie will be dark and gritty. The sharp edges of the text look like blades which connotatedanger!

This shows the core convention of the plot, which is technology and hacking! The black liquid is also of blood like consistency, which connotates death and murder.

This is establishing the genre by using dulled out colors, low key lighting and dark shadows on the faces, this could connotate dark emotions…

This starts to create a contrast in color, it causes the audience to feel a sense of excitement and fear! It also makes the opening more interesting and complex!

A bird is often associated with freedom, this could have some sort of meaning into the storyline, perhaps the freedom of the protagonist or even the antoagonist!!

This shows vines growing round the bodies, this has connotations of imprisonment and fear. It also makes the bodies look weak!

This shows what is presumably a developing baby. The colors could have connotations of death or a miscarriage.

This shows two people kissing, it could show that they are having a messed up relationship. The low key lighting also creates a strong sense of tension and fear.

The colors used are very low key and glossy, this could have connotations of death.
