Empathy

•  Learner factor in SLA (Brown,1973).

Empathy is the process of “putting yourself into someone’s [sic] else’s shoes,” of reaching beyond the self and understanding and feeling what another person is understanding or feeling; it is probably the major factor in the harmonious co-existence of individuals in society. Language is one of the primary means of emphathizing. Kinesic, kinesthetic, proxemic, and other paralinguistic modes of communication facilitate the process of emphathizing, and must not be overlooked. (p. 235)

•  Integral to managing effects of culture shock. (Winkelman, 1994).
