Repairing Spalled Reinforced Concrete using PatchPins

METHOD STATEMENT

Specification Notes

The following criteria are to be used unless specified otherwise:

A. Pilot hole diameter to be 6.5mm

B. Pilot hole depth to be 2”

C. Pin spacing and position can be varied according to site conditions

D. Pins are to be installed approx. 2” from the edge of the patched area

E. Intermediate pins should be at 6” – 8” centers. Extra pins may be used atthe discretion of the engineer / site manager.

F. There should be a minimum of two pins per patch.

G. The outer end of installed pins must be below the face of the concretepatch. To ensure this occurs pins may be bent as required.

The above specification notes are for general guidance only and Helifix reservesthe right to amend details/notes as necessary.

1. Remove all loose concrete from the area to be patched. Hammer tapthe area to establish if any hollows are present and break back tosound concrete. Remove any dust and debris with a sti� wire brush.Clean and treat any exposed steel rebar with a suitable coating, e.g.epoxy or zinc paint.

2. Drill pilot holes, vertically or at an angle of up to 45°, to the correctdiameter and spacing into the concrete (using an SDS rotary hammerdrill).

3. Fit the PatchPin support tool over the drill bit and insert the PatchPininto the tool. Install the PatchPin into the pilot hole with the SDSrotary hammer drill set to hammer only. Ensure that the outer end ofthe pin is below the face of the concrete patch – the pin can be bent,if required.

4. Apply the patching mortar, as required, in accordance with themanufacturers instructions. Fill all gaps and make good the surface.
