Example entry

Andersen, Hans. “The Evolution of the Evil Stepmother.” The World of Fairytales.

28 October 2005 <http://www.talesoffairy.com/evolution/htm>.

This article, directed towards high school students, chiefly evaluates the role of stepparents, namely the stepmother, in fairytales. It discusses the notion that the stepmother is symbolic of society’s obsession with beauty. The constant attempts of various stepmothers to eliminate their children parallels society’s constant attempt to conquer that intangible ideal, beauty. The article delineates the archetype shared by stepmothers found in fairytales in nearly every culture and time period. Though stepfathers are uncommon in fairytales, the book does address the few fairytales that contain stepfathers as well as other types of guardians. This article also discusses the negative impact the portrayal of stepparents has had on society’s perception of stepparents, stepmothers specifically.

This comprehensive article is an excellent resource to aide in the understanding of the stepmother’s role in fairytales. The information provided is easy to understand and straightforward. Also, there are some interesting graphic interpretations of various fairytale stepmothers. I would highly recommend this article.
