• Substantial body of recent and current environmental research in academia & elsewhere – visibility is poor

• UK work now through projects rather than programmes

• Coordination and focus is weak – SA engagement can rectify

• Falls mainly outside current scope of AGP/ATI activity yet dependencies exist
