Resistance to ChangePresented by http://decision-making-howto.com

Introduction

✤ Some us are very uncomfortable with change. This exercise is useful because it helps see on paper what are the fears associated with a decision you want/need to make and what are your motivations.

Introduction

✤ You want to identify the forces for and against a decision.

The Lay Out

✤ Use a sheet of paper where you need to draw a standing rectangle and arrows on both side of the rectangle. In the centre, notes the plan, decision, or situation you are dealing with.

worksheetIn the right column, list all the forces against change. In the left column, list all the forces for change.

Then assign to each point a score from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong). Note the total under each column.

Example

✤ Here is an example of a person who wants to eat in a healthier way.

Example

Analysis

✤ If the forces against change are considerably stronger than the forces for change, it is probably not a good idea, or not the right time.

✤ If the forces are balanced, then you will find yourself stuck in a transition zone where there’s a desire for change but too much resistance to make it happen. In that case, using your chart, you can work on

Work with the information

✤ 1. Reducing the forces against change by addressing every point in the right column.

✤ 2. Strengthening the forces for change.

Work with the information

✤ In our example, for the force against change “Tired at the end of the day”, the person can decide to wash and prep the fruits and vegetables in one go, and store them in Tupperware so that way, it’ll take less time and effort to prepare a healthy dinner after a long day at work. That force against change will go from a 5 to a 1.
