Style Notes Part 1

Resume writing = business writing + marketing writing

No rules are set in stone. Style can vary depending on your industry and personality. Here are some universal guidelines:

• First person, but no personal pronouns (me, I).

• Leave out unnecessary articles (a, an, the). Think newspaper headline:

“Waitress wins lottery.”

• Formatting and parts of speech should be consistent.

Style Notes Part 2

Resume writing = business writing + marketing writing

• All bulleted accomplishments begin with past tense verbs.

• Current job descriptions are present tense. Descriptions of former positions

are past tense.

• Avoid adverbs (anything ending in “ly”).

• Let facts speak for themselves.

We have really everything in common with America nowadays except, of course, language.- Oscar Wilde

vs.

• Commodities, like gas, are traded on the basis of price.

• Items that are unique are traded based on their specific perceived value.

• If your resume is a laundry list of education, responsibilities, and skills,

then you are a commodity on the job market.
