INTRODUCTION
The Rexnord® 7956 MatTop® chains are designed for the conveying industry’s most demanding applications. These chains provide numerous
benefits to the designer, builder, and the end user, including:
• Reduced total system cost through the ability for longer runs on a single drive
• Flexibility in applications and ease of setup based on the retention features of the chain
• Excellent product handling and low operational costs based on the proven Rexnord MatTop design
Available in 6 in (152.4 mm), 12 in (304.8 mm), 15 in (381.0 mm), 18 in (457.2 mm), 24 in (609.6 mm) and 30 in (762.00 mm) widths, the Rexnord 7956 MatTop chains are ideal for case handling applications as a substitute for roller, skate wheel, powered roller, powered belt, and line shaft conveyors. The 15 in (381.0 mm) wide chain is also a good substitute for dual-lane conveyors currently using 7.50 in (190.5 mm)
wide chains. Available sprocket sizes are 16 and 26 tooth.
The Rexnord 7956 MatTop chains include three retention types:
As explained later in the manual, each of these has applications for which it is most appropriate.
This manual outlines criteria for selecting the proper version of chain, and includes chain dimensions, basic conveyor design considerations, and installation recommendations. Following the suggestions outlined in this manual will ensure proper operation of the conveyor to provide the optimal product handling and optimum chain life. This manual contains information that is specific to the Rexnord 7956 MatTop chains and should be used in conjunction with the Rexnord Engineering manual (8rxEM-en).

Selection Criteria
The Rexnord® 7956 MatTop® RexFlex™ chains can handle all important applications requiring a side-flexing chain. Choosing the appropriate chain is based on two criteria:
• The length of pull to be accomplished by the chain, which is driven by the chain strength and the type of retention needed — TAB, No TAB or bearing
• Special handling characteristics around the curve
First, determine whether a bearing is required for the length of pull. The tables below show the acceptable range for different chain types. If the application requires the use of 7956B, a carbon steel bearing requiring no service or lubrication is standard. Stainless steel bearings are available on a made-to-order basis for applications requiring high pressure wash down or conveyor line lubrication.
Secondly, review the application to determine if any of the following special requirements apply:
Rexnord 7956GT MatTop Chain is most appropriate when:• Sliding packages on/off the chain from the side is needed
• Cleaning under the chain in the corner is required
Rexnord 7956 No TAB MatTop Chain is most appropriate when:• Capturing the chain on both the inside and the outside is needed
• The configuration of the wear surface would allow for interference with tabs or bearings
• The size or configuration of the support structure will not allow for the bearing or tab

CARRY SECTION WEARSTRIPS
General Recommendations for Corners and Straights • uhMWpE wearstrips are recommended
• If required for improved performance, nylon wearstrips may be used in the corners
• Recommended wearstrip thickness is 0.75 in (19.05 mm) minimum. Thicker wearstrips can be used if desired
• All sharp edges of wearstrips, including corner tracks, should be chamfered to ensure smooth chain movement. Recommended contact surface finish of wearstrips is 32 to 125 µ-in Ra (0.8 to 3.2 µ-m Ra) for best wear performance
• Inside edges of straight and corner sections should contain a lead-in or chamfer for a smooth transition
• If center wearstrips are required due to product loading, they can be staggered to distribute chain wear
• Offset rail, serpentine and chevron patterns are recommended to maximize chain life because they provide uniform wear across the full width of the chain.
• Refer to the engineering manual (8rxem-en) for more details on carry and return ways.

Catenary and Other Setup NotesThe design criteria that apply to standard Rexnord® TableTop® or MatTop® chains also apply to Rexnord 7956 MatTop chains. Criteria such as
wearstrip selection, lubrication, and catenary are the same as found in the Rexnord Engineering Manual (8rxEM-en).
• Minimum recommended straight section between the last corner and the drive shaft is 30 in (762.0 mm)
• Minimum recommended straight section between the first corner and the idler shaft is 9 in (228.6 mm)
• Carry wearstrips should end 1.25 in (31.8 mm)from the drive or tail shaft. (see drawing on page 16)
• The proper catenary is critical for performance, therefore catenary of 18 in to 24 inches (450 mm to 600 mm) is strongly recommended
• Return wearstrips should end 3 in to 6 in (75 mm to 125 mm) from bottom of tail sprockets
