JULY 02, 2014
Fire PowerShaun Tolson
There’s nothing quite like the thunderous boom of fireworks to cap off a good Fourth of July. And we’rewilling to bet that the desire to see projectiles explode in midair has existed since fire was discovered. It’s one thing to take in the splendor, but it’s quite another to be in control of it; so for those who want todabble in some pyrotechnics this Fourth of July, pay attention.
“We have huge fountains and huge aerials,” says a spokesperson for TNT Fireworks, one of thecountry’s premier fireworks brands. She goes on to explain that the largest size available for consumeruse is 500 grams, but the decision between a fountain (which keeps the flares just above ground level)and an aerial (your traditional inair firework) is dependent upon where you live. “If you’ve only got yourbackyard,” she laughs, “you’re not going to shoot an aerial over your neighbor’s house!”
TNT’s maximumsized aerials include multishot arrangements with whimsical names (What’s Up,Powerful Stuff, Watch This!), names that you can only hope aren’t foreshadowing (Brink of Disaster,Crisis Alert, Catastrophe), and names that, quite frankly, we really can’t explain (Gator Hunter, Big FatHissee Fit). If you want something that will get every dog in your neighborhood barking, we recommendthe aforementioned What’s Up, an aerial show made up of a dozen triplestage, whistling silver cracklingcomets; but if you’re looking for something more patriotic, you can’t go wrong with the Salute toAmerica, a 16shot array of red crackling bouquets, blue crackling stars, and silver crackling flowers.
TNT isn’t the only serious fireworks manufacturer in the country, however. Spirit of ’76, a wholesalefireworks enterprise based in Columbia, Mo., sells nine brands of fireworks, including its own ’76 ProLine, which it says is designed for “professional display operators and serious pyros.” The company also

operates a warehouse in Easton, Penn.—equidistant between Philadelphia and New York City—andrecently made it possible for outofstate customers to pick up their orders from that facility. Want towake up your entire town? The Brothersmanufactured Boombastic 12shot aerial show sold by Spirit of’76 should do the trick.
What’s that? You live in a state where consumer fireworks are illegal? Don’t worry, we’ve got youcovered. Actually, Drai’s Beach Club in Las Vegas does. The club offers various packages that includepersonal rooftop fireworks displays (each offering buyers the chance to detonate them themselves). Forthose who choose to purchase these packages at the club, they start at $20,000 (a 30second fireworksdisplay and 20 bottles of Dom Pérignon Brut Luminous) and peak at $100,000 (a 120second fireworksdisplay and 100 bottles of Dom Pérignon Brut Luminous). But the club also offers privatejet packagesthat include charters for between eight and 50 people, 150 to more than 200 bottles of Champagne, andfireworks displays between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes in length. Those cost anywhere from $250,000 to asmuch as $737,000 (priced to reflect the 737 businessjet charter that’s included).
“The way our guys produce fireworks, it’s very impactful,” says Ryan Craig, one of the club’s managingpartners. “It’s a stadiumquality fireworks show. The loudest one that we have sounds like a bomb wentoff.”
