• Was seen most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature.
• Moved away from Classical form and structure
• Expressed emotions through music • Feeling• Intuition• Imagination
• Music was used to tell stories, or give ideas to express a meaning
• Composers began to use other countries around the world for a source of new musical ideas
• Melodies are longer, more dramatic and emotional
• There is a greater variety of instruments, including improved or newly-invented wind instruments
Ludwig Van Beethoven(1770-1827)
• German composer and pianist
• Studied with Haydn
• Was the link between the Classical Period into the Romantic period
• Around 1796, Beethoven began to lose his hearing
• Suffered from tinnitus- a severe “ringing” in the ears
• Kept conversation books between friends and other musicians
• Rumored that he cut the legs off the piano to hear it better through the vibrations on the floor
