Physicalscienceisthefocusofthe7thgradesciencecurriculum.ThecourseemphasizesscientifictheoryandtheScientificMethod.Studentswillhaveanopportunitytobuildcognitiveandmanipulativescienceskillsthroughclassroominstructionandlaboratoryexperiences.Topicswillinclude:theatomandatomictheory,molecules,simpleequations,heat,workandmachines,forces,andenergy.Applicationsofenergy,includingalternativeenergysources,willbeinvestigated.Science7ispartofthemulti-yearsciencesequencethatpreparesstudentsfortheScience8Assessment.

The7thgradesocialstudiescourseisanintroductiontothehistoryoftheUnitedStatesbeginningwiththeageofexplorationandthediscoveryoftheNewWorld.StudentsstudythechronologybywhichtheUnitedStatesmovesfromitscolonialinfancytotheCivilWarperiod.Wherepossible,theartsandliteratureareusedtoenrichthecourseofstudy.Alloftheimportantsocialstudiesskillsareintroducedincludinggraphinterpretation,essaywriting,note-taking,mapanalysis,andtheunderstandingofpoliticalcartoons.Multiculturalismandvalueseducationareinterwovenintothecurriculum.

ThiscoursewillfocusonAmericanpopularcultureasrepresentedbyfourdecades:the70s,80s,90sand2000s.Thecoursewillbedividedintotherespectivedecadesandeachdecadewillexplorechangesinvalues,attitudesandperspectiveswithregardtomusicandart,film,gender,race,massmediaandnews,fashion,andteenculture.Moreover,studentswilldiscussimportanteventsandsocialissues.Studentswillanalyzeanddiscussrelevantprimarysourcesincludingfilmandtelevisionclips,popularmusicandlyrics,photographs,poetryandartwork.Studentswillexaminethesourcesofpopularculture,thedynamicsofculturalchangeandthedeterminersofsocialvalues.Asaculminatingactivity,studentswillworkcollaborativelytoconstructaunitonthecurrentdecade,the2010s.

TheFilmProductionelectivewillbeofferedinalternatingyearsservingasaperfectcomplementtotheFilmStudieselective,whichwillbeofferedtoall7thand8thgradersinalternatingyears.TheFilmProductionelectivewillgivestudentsachancetoputtheirknowledgeoffilmandimagestopracticaluseastheycreatetheirownshortfilmsinseveraldifferentgenres.Moreover,theclasswillbetheperfectlead-intotheVideoProductionelectiveofferedattheHighSchool.Ourstudentsareagenerationofbornfilmmakers,andthiscoursewillbedesignedtogivethatimpulseasenseofstructure,designandtechnique.FilmProductionwillculminatewithastudentshortfilmfestival,whichwillhighlightstudents’bestworkandtowhichthecommunitywillbeinvited.

Health7,arequiredcourseinNewYorkState,isofferedforonehalfyearingradeseven.Thecourseisdesignedtohelpstudentsbecomeawareofthelifestylefactorsthatinfluencetheirhealthstatus.Thecoursebeginswithastrongfoundationindecision-makingskills,whichisthenappliedtosuchtopicsaspeerrelationships,familylife,physicalfitness,avoidingtobacco,alcoholandotherdrugs,andfosteringahealthylifestyle.Studentswilllearntodeveloppositivehealthattitudesthroughdiscussion,research,andgroupactivities.

Studentsplaytheroleofreal-lifemedicaldetectivesastheyanalyzegenetictestingresultstodiagnosediseaseandstudyDNAevidencefoundata“crimescene.”Theysolvemedicalmysteriesthroughhands-onprojectsandlabs,investigatehowtomeasureandinterpretvitalsigns,andlearnhowthesystemsofthehumanbodyworktogethertomaintainhealth.
