Outline of the Presentation

• Introduction to Ad Hoc Networks

• Routing in Ad Hoc Networks• Position-aided Routing• My Research Area

Position-aided Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Wireless Network

• Access Technologies:– Bluetooth – (1Mbps, 3 meters)– IEEE 802.11b – (11Mbps, 100

meters)– IEEE 802.11a – (55 Mbps, 20

meters)

• Operating Modes:– Infrastructure Mode (Access

Point)– Ad Hoc Mode

Position-aided Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Ad Hoc Network

• Ad Hoc Network is a dynamically created network that doesn’t rely on any fixed infrastructure for its operation but works in a shared wireless media.

Routing Problems in Ad Hoc Networks

• Mobility of the nodes• Limitations on bandwidth• Limitations on power (battery)• Security

Problems due to limited bandwidth

• Limited bandwidth requires the signaling traffic to be minimized in an Ad Hoc network.

• There is usually a trade off between the latency and the signaling traffic.

Position-aided Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Approaches to Routing in Ad Hoc Networks

• Table driven routing protocols – Proactive in nature– Generate lot of signaling traffic– Less latency

• On demand routing protocols – Reactive in nature– Generate less signaling traffic– More latency

Position-aided Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Position-aided Routing Protocols

• Use the location information about the other nodes from some positioning system like Global Positioning System (GPS).

• Results in reduction in signaling traffic.

• Reduction in latency.

My Research

• Develop a routing protocol that’s– Scalable– Efficient– Robust

• Approach– A combination of position-aided

and hierarchical approach.
