RCIA INQUIRY Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or are you a baptized Catholic who never received Confirmation and Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which persons follow the call of God to faith and to unity with the Catholic Church. Any questions call Georgette Lyons at 718-631-1307.
CHILDRENS’ LITURGY OF THE WORD
Our parish celebrates a Children’s Liturgy of the Word mass during the school year.
What is CLOW?
During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.
Our CLOW masses will resume in the fall.
FAMILY MASS
During the school year Sacred Heart celebrates a Family Mass.
At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children’s liturgies are used. Children’s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children’s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.
Our Family Masses will resume in the fall.

ARISE TOGETHER IN CHRIST
In September 2016 SACRED HEART commenced a new
diocesan spiritual renewal program, ARISE Together in
Christ. This program is part of Pope Francis’s call for new
evangelization. The program focuses on spiritual renewal,
adult faith formation, and evangelization. The program was
developed by Renew International; their website provides
additional information: www.renewintl.org/arise..
ARISE consists of small groups of parishioners (8 to 12)
meeting once a week for six weeks. Each week participants
read a particular scripture passage and then reflect on how that
passage impacts their lives. The groups are led by a
facilitator and meet generally for 1 ½ hours.
The theme for Season I was ENCOUNTERING CHRIST
TODAY. ARISE group members read several New Testament
passages where Christ encounters some person or group and
ignites change. Included were the curing of the paralyzed man,
the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables of the Lost Sheep and
the Lost Coin, Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray, and the
conversion of Paul. For each passage, ARISE group members
attempted to discern how God entered a human situation and
inspired change. They shared accounts from their own lives
where they felt God’s presence inspiring change as in the
Scripture readings.
Season II: CHANGE OUR HEARTS occurred during Lent
2017. This season began with a reflection on the central call
of Ash Wednesday to “conversion” both as “turning away from
…” and “turning towards … .” That was followed by a session
on the Transfiguration – a foretaste of God’s Kingdom. Then
followed sessions on the great symbols of the Old
Testament: water (participants reflected on Jesus’s meeting
the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, and living
water), light (participants read about Jesus’s encounter at night
with Nicodemus, and new life), and new Covenant (not written
on stone tablets but on the hearts of believers). Season II
concluded with a reflection on Holy Week – not just a historical
observance but an entrée into the “Paschal Mystery.”
Season III: IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST will begin this
fall. If you missed earlier sessions, you can still join for
Season III. Morning, afternoon, and evening groups will be
available. A signup sheet will be posted in
September. SEASON III BEGINS THE WEEK OF OCTOBER
8TH.
AGING-WELL
“What the consumer should expect from a home care nurse or home health aide”
Tuesday, September 19
7:00-8:00pm Sacred Heart Church Hall
Presenter: Margaret Greeley, RN
Join us for the fourth in a series of presentations that have been recommended by Barbara Speedling, a quality management consultant to long term care facilities. Our first meeting with Barbara was held in March. It was met with great enthusiasm. The topics that have been selected for the series are a direct result of the input received from those in attendance. So, if you are concerned about your own aging or the aging of loved ones, this on-going series will benefit you. Whether you are preparing for your own aging wellness, or caring for someone at home, or responsible for overseeing the care of someone living in an assisted living or nursing home environment, these presentations will help to provide you with the practical advice and resources necessary to accessing appropriate clinical and community care and support. For info., call Sr. Kathleen at 718-224-5695.
SEASON OF CREATION
September 1 thru October 4
In 2015, after the publication of his encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis established September 1 as an observance for the Catholic Church of prayer for THE CARE OF CREATION. Despite our failings and the daunting challenges before us, we never lose heart. In the words of Pope Francis, “The Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us … for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward.” In solidarity with all of creation, you are invited to pray today and throughout the Season of Creation the following prayer:
PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF CREATION. O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
who are so precious in your eyes. God of love, show us our place in this world
as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth.
God of mercy, may we receive your forgiveness and convey your mercy throughout our common home.
Praise be to you! Amen.
CADETT GIRL SCOUTS
SILVER AWARD PROJECT: Sacred Heart Parish Girl Scouts are very busy this summer!! Hello! Our names are Sophia Salomon and Alyssa Pastine, we are Cadett Girl Scouts at Sacred Heart Parish, and we are ANOTHER TROOP working towards our Silver Award!! For our project, we are renovating and decorating the New Moms classroom, for infants and pre-school age children, to make it a fun and welcoming experience. We are in need of supplies, and we would like o ask the parishioners of Sacred Heart for donations. We are in need of the following: Posters/Wall art, large alphabet letters, crayons/markers, oil paint, small paint brushes, window decals for children, games for pre-school age children, books, toys, small rugs, 10 X13 rug, foam mats for the floor. For your convenience, a drop off bin has been placed in the church foyer. All donations are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about our project, please contact us at 347-558-8166. ENCYCLICAL ON THE ENVIRONMENT In his encyclical on creation care, Pope Francis highlights “integral ecology” as the basis of the conversion we are all called to in order to save our common home from destruction. “Integral ecology” is the profound, fundamental interconnection between God, human beings, and all the rest of creation. With Pope Francis we pray, “Triune God…Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is.” As we reflect on our relationship to life-giving water, the air we breathe, and the ground we walk on, let us think of actions that we can take locally to protect the air, water and land for the generations to come. We might consider supporting legislative bills of our city, county or state that will serve to do this.
