PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
We continue to make progress on our July 1st transition:
Our 2 parishes will be linked with Fairmont-East Chain
& will be pastored by Fr. Andrew Beerman, currently
pastor in Fairmont-East Chain, with the assistance of Fr.
Brian Mulligan, ordained 1 year ago & currently
associate pastor at the Winona Cathedral. They will both
be at all 3 of the Masses here in Blue Earth-Winnebago
on their 1st weekend, July 6/7, for introductions & next
steps. I’m anticipating good things for you: Not only a
new voice but new voices. Every pastor brings his own
gifts & ideas & emphases in ministry & reaches different
people in different ways. The new pastors coming soon
will bring a good time of new growth.
Our churches look a little more ordinary now that the
Easter Season is completed. “Ordinary,” in fact, is the
term we use for the time of the year apart from Advent-
Christmas (celebrating the incarnation) & Lent-Easter
(celebrating the paschal mystery). But “ordinary,”
liturgically, does not mean ordinary as we ordinarily use
the word ordinary. That plain term in Latin (ordinare)
means “to set in order or in relation to each other,” so
“Ordinary Time Sundays” are not plain ones but ordered
ones. Queued up. These 34 Sundays are set in order to
tell the rest of the story. Or, in the official language of our
Church’s lectionary: These 34 Sundays in each liturgical
cycle “do not celebrate a specific aspect of the mystery of
Christ but are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its
aspects.”
Ordinary Time has 2 phases, a shorter one in winter
between the season of Christmas & the season of Lent
and a longer one through the summer & fall between the
season of Easter & the season of Advent. The pre-Lenten
phase begins Monday after the Baptism of our Lord. It’s
then interrupted by Ash Wednesday for the seasons of
Lent & Easter; then it resumes Monday after Pentecost &
continues until the end of the Church year.
The 1st 2 Sundays when Ordinary Time resumes after
Pentecost have had special feast days assigned to them
(like Christ the King has been assigned to the last Sunday
in Ordinary Time, the Sunday before Advent). These 2
feasts following Pentecost are today’s Trinity Sunday &
next Sunday’s Body & Blood of Christ (also known as
Corpus Christi). They are “concept” feasts, not
commemorating events like Easter & Pentecost but
celebrate truths of our faith.
The great mystery of the Blessed Trinity that we’re
celebrating today, as we’ve noted before, is represented
symbolically in the windows of both our churches. In St.
Mary’s, near the back on the left, is that unique triangle
with the Latin words: “The Father is God,” “The Father is
not the Son,” “the Son is God,” “the Son is not the
Father,” & so on. In SS Peter & Paul’s,
above the Good Shepherd image in the
main sanctuary window, there are
images of the hand, the lamb, & the
dove, representing the Father, the Son,
& the Holy Spirit (overwhelmed by the
Good Shepherd image & so hardly noticed).
