Famous Personalities

Bhanubhakta Acharya (1814 AD – 1868 AD). Pioneer of Nepali poetry and literature . He translated the great epic 'Ramayana' from Sanskrit to Nepali.

Laxmi Prasad Devkota (November 12, 1909 – September 14, 1959) Devkota is considered the greatest poet of Nepali literature—he has been given the title of "Maha Kavi" ("The Great Poet") of Nepali language.

Major Durga Malla (1913-1944). He was the first Gorkha soldier in Indian National Army (INA) to sacrifice his life for the cause of the nation. To honour this great hero, a statue was unveiled at the Parliament House Complex by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in 2004.

Tenzing Norgay (1914 -1986)

born Namgyal Wangdi and often referred to as Tenzing Sherpa, was a Nepalese Indian Sherpa mountaineer. He was one of the first two individuals known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, which he accomplished with Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953. He was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century

Ganju Lama (1924 – 2000)

He was a Nepalese Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Danny Denzongpa Film actor Tshering Phintso "Danny" Denzongpa is an Indian actor of Sikkimese-Bhutia-Nepali descent, working in Bollywood films. He has acted in numerous Hindi films such as Asoka , 16 December , Boss etc.

Dipprasad Pun

He is a Nepalese corporal of the Royal Gurkha Rifles who was decorated with the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for an act of bravery during the War in Afghanistan on the night of 17 September 2010. Pun, then an Acting Sergeant, single-handedly defeated 12 - 30 Taliban insurgents.

Bhaichung Bhutia

Bhaichung Bhutia is an Indian footballer who plays as a striker. Bhutia is considered to be the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena. He is the former captain of Indian football team. Three-time Indian Player of the Year. He has also been described as "God's gift to Indian football".

Sunil Chhetri Sunil Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer. He is the present captain of Indian football team. Chhetri has also been named AIFF Player of the Year twice in 2007 and again in 2011. Chhetri has represented India at international level too.

Bharat Chettri

Bharat Chettri (born in 1982, Kalimpong, West Bengal) is an Indian field hockey player. He is the goalkeeper of the Indian hockey team. He captained the Indian hockey team in the 2012 London Olympics.

Shiva Thapa

He is an Indian boxer from Guwahati, Assam. He belongs to the Indian Gorkha community. He represented India in the 2012 London Olympics, and is the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics.

The Gurkha Regiment

The Gurkhas are known for their courage and valour.

Since independence, the Gurkhas have fought in every major campaign involving the Indian Army being awarded numerous battle and theatre honours. The regiments have won many gallantry awards like the Param Vir Chakra and the Maha Vir Chakra. The 8 Gorkha Rifles, has the unique distinction of producing one of the two Field Marshals of the Indian Army, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and is still revered as one of its finest officers.
