About Anselmians
Old Anselmians
Rugby Union
Football Club
was created when a
group of Old Boys of
St. Anselm’s College
got together a5er
the Second World
War through a
shared love of rugby.
Early playing facili(es and
ameni(es were primi(ve
and it wasn’t un(l the mid-
1950s that the club
relocated to its present
home here in Eastham
village.
Since 1947, the club has
produced a number of quality
rugby players. Aus(n Healey
would go on to win fi4y one
England caps and tour with
the Bri(sh and Irish Lions. In
the 1995-96 Five Na(ons
compe((on, Chris(an
Saverimu9o was capped
three (mes for Ireland.
More recently, in 2002, Ben
Johnston, the No<ngham
player/coach, was capped
twice by England, whilst Chris
Pilgrim, has played for
Newcastle Falcons, Yorkshire
Carnegie and the Barbarians.
And, of course, erstwhile
coach, Simon Mason, who
was also capped three (mes
by Ireland in the 1995-96 Five
Na(ons compe((on.
With the advent of first merit
tables and, now, league rugby,
many of our tradi(onal fixtures
have lapsed. The “Old” was
dropped from the name and
“Anselmians” 1st XV now
compete in the South
Lancashire/Cheshire Division
One. The 2nd (Crusaders) and
3rd (Mavericks) XVs play in
Division 3 South and Division 5
West, and the thriving mini and
junior sec(on is the envy of
many clubs.
Ravi Sibal recently became club
chairman with a specific brief to
prepare the club for the next
chapter in its history. Two key
elements to the club’s plans are
the development of younger
players and the building of a
new clubhouse which will set
the club on course to fulfil its
ambi(on of becoming the
premier spor(ng/social club in
Wirral and West Cheshire.
Anselmians remains a
friendly and forward
thinking club true to the
vision of those young men
who began it all with the
simple wish:
“to play rugby with a smile.”
Our Founding Players
What a start we have had on
the field, we have had a great
start for the 1st XV with wins
at Southport and Tyldesley
and the Mavericks being
unbeaten with 4 wins!!
We are playing a great style of
rugby this season with open
running and playing with the
ball in hand.
It’s great to see the impact of
our new coaching set up and
the revitalised club spirit. We
are seeing an injec(on of new
players and returning players
helping create more strength in
depth in the club.
We are also welcoming a new
side at the club, we launch our
full contact senior women’s
side on the 2nd October. We
are looking to build this up with
leadership from Mel Chapman.
Off the field we have been
making great progress with the
development of the Rugby
Ambassador community,
leading the charge for juniors
recruitment and development
of the management side of the
junior sec(on.
We have also welcomed
onboard a new sponsor for the
3rd team ‘PILZ’ who are kit
sponsors for the current
season.

Chairman’s Notes
Club Chairman—Ravi Sibal
LSH have started the season well
and sit at the top of the league
having won 3 from 3 and taken a
winning bonus point in all games .
Andy Northey has them on point and we
will have to keep a close eye on the
impressive wingers Romano & Mcbride who
are scoring tries for fun , the la9er crossing
for a hat-trick last week against the Medics
of Manchester . Livewire skipper Darren
Wilson will also need watching closely as
most of the good LSH work sees him
involved .
Following a decent home win against
Tyldesley, Saints came up short last week
away at West Park and will need to protect
the ball be9er today .Andy makes several
changes to the team today through injury
and unavailability . Jack Richards comes
back into the front row along side skipper
Nick Hearn at hooker whilst Lewis Keen
retains his place in the front row . Ant Evans
comes back into the back row following work
du(es whilst Dan Meredith gets his first start of
the season at 9 . Adam Bramall starts on the
wing and Iain Taylor resumes at 15. We
welcome newcomer Stu Costello into the
squad who joins Saints from Leodensians ,
having also played at Otley and Morley, he
brings experience and compe((on into the
back row posi(ons .
The Crusaders(2nd
xv) posted a great score last
week against Congleton and are now beginning
to show they belong in Div 3 south , This week
Neil & Alan take The Crusaders over to play LSH
of all teams so it should prove to be a great
game as both teams are locked together in the
league .
Tim and The Mavericks remain unbeaten and
sit at the summit of Div 5 West .This week they
make the short trip to face Prenton in a local
derby .
The senior colts have done excellently winning
their last 2 games against Li9leborough at
home and Winnington Park away and this week
travel to face West Park . Sean deserves a lot
of credit for keeping this squad together and
fielding a compe((ve team .
Good luck to all Saints teams this weekend . A
big thank you to all of our sponsors and
volunteers . Please be loud and fair in your
support of all Saints teams , with respect for
our opposiYon and match day referee .

Despite the torren>al rain earlier
that day, the 1st XV pitch at
Malone Field looked at its glorious
best. Buoyed by their victory the previous
Saturday, Tyldesley arrived to meet an
Anselmian side confident a4er the heroics
at Southport.
It was Tyldesley who had the be9er of the
early exchanges with their lively half-backs
sniping at the Saints’ fringe defence. Scrum-
half Ma9 Soulsby and, increasingly, stand-
off and captain, Mark Dickinson, explored
the blind side to good effect and
established a Tyldesley presence in the
Anselmian 22. Dickinson, normally a centre,
went close before he bullocked over to give
the visitors a deserved early lead at 12
minutes. The conversion was difficult, but
full-back Paul Mar(n miscued his kick. 5-0.
From the restart, Saints tried to establish a
pa9ern and, in throwing the ball wide,
gi4ed speedy Tyldesley wing Jack
Fitzpatrick an intercep(on. Luckily for
Anselmians, referee Edmonds blew for a
penalty on the Tyldesley ten metre line, but
Saints’ full-back Iain Taylor sent it wide of
the right hand post. The visitors con(nued
to impress and, from another Anselmian
infringement, a quick tap penalty produced
intense Tyldesley pressure only relieved by
a knock-on. It would be the first of several
Anselmian escapes. As last week, it was the
Anselmian forwards who had to work the
hardest. Prominent in the rear-guard ac(on
were Captain Nick Hearn, playing at No. 8,
and the increasingly influen(al Nick
Lamming.
A long, specula(ve clearance from
Dickinson and some intricate passing
provided wing Kirkpatrick with an
opportunity but Tyldesley, again, knocked
on. A high tackle on Saints’ centre Sam
Russell produced a penalty and, a4er some
Tyldesley comment, the referee marched
ten metres to the Tyldesley line and Taylor
made no mistake in opening the home
team’s account on thirty five minutes. Soon
a4er, a series of Anselmians’ a9acks and a

de4 chip from stand-off Andy Cummings saw
the ubiquitous Lamming crash over the Tyldesley
line. Taylor added the extras and Anselmians,
somewhat against the run of play, went to half-
(me leading 10-5.
Anselmians’ lead a4er the restart was increased
when Tyldesley erred a4er a long clearance by
the Anselmian full-back Taylor. The kick by Taylor
increased the lead to 13-5 meaning that
Tyldesley would have to score twice to win. Led
by Captain Dickinson, the visitors began to
pressure the home defence but, like last week,
Anselmians kept their shape and there were
important midfield tackles by the both second
rowers John Clark and Josh Jones. A couple of
failed touch kicks allowed Tyldesley to a9ack on
the right and, for once, the quick winger
Kirkpatrick held on to a pass and sped to the line.
Anselmian supporters were convinced both his
feet were in touch and, indeed , the linesman put
his le4 hand up, but as the winger touched down,
he immediately put his right hand up in
celebra(on of the try. The hapless kicker missed
the conversion. 13-10.
Con(nued Tyldesley pressure on the Anselmian
line produced an opening on the right, but the
(cont’d)
final pass went straight into touch. It was only a
break by stand-off Cummings that established an
Anselmian presence in the Tyldesley half and, a4er
a series of phases, a mis(med and high Tyldesley
tackle gave full-back Taylor a straighUorward
penalty in front of the posts to extend Saints’ lead
to 16-10.
The pivotal moment of the game occurred on
seventy minutes when a high, specula(ve
Anselmian clearance kick landed in play and
bounced. Tyldesey players, assuming it was in
touch, or about to bounce out, stood s(ll. Not so
Anselmian stand-off Andy Cummings, who plucked
the ball and galloped forty yards unopposed to
beneath the posts. Taylor added the conversion and
Anselmians were comfortable at 23-10. Tyldesley,
obviously aggrieved, launched a series of furious
a9acks in the last five minutes, but, like last week,
the Anselmian defence kept its shape and important
tackles by John Clark and Man of the Match
Lamming, summed up the Anselmian effort.
Tyldesley were generous in defeat and, as a newly-
promoted side they will find the step up difficult,
but no Anselmian supporter would disagree that
“The Bongs” have enough talent and organisa(on to
survive in this highly compe((ve league.
The club cannot func(on without the (reless work of a small band of volunteers and we always need new recruits.
If you feel that you have something to offer please step up, there is plenty to do!

WEST PARK
Rugby can be quite an uncomplicated game if played properly … When you receive the ball do all in your power to protect it , build pressure on your opposi>on by asking ques>ons of the defence and when the opportunity arises take it and punish them .
Saints were beaten by a be9er West Park side on Saturday who managed to control the ball and from 1-18 were more comfortable with the ball in hand.
It will be a tough day at the office when the opposi(on front 5 are happy and available to receive the ball at all (mes and are adept at the offload in the tackle!
The weather held fair on a bright St Helens a4ernoon and the travelling Saints took their place on the bank having been Jus(n’d over lunch following his recent summer soirees to Talacre beach ..
The home side started brightly and Saints coughed up early possession allowing WP To take an early 5-0 lead . Saints were quick to respond with a penalty on 7 mins from Sammy Russell.
The hosts began to take control of the game and were rewarded with a 20th minute try from Ainsworth who powered over with Rosney comple(ng the extras to take a 12-3 lead. Saints began to get a foothold as Russell probed into the WP midfield and on 22 minutes following a quickly taken pen Campbell Clayton scored to make it 8-12 and on 37 mins Charlie Hough crossed for Saints with Andy Cumming conver(ng12-13 going into the break “game on” , let’s keep the ball and
see the half out, Park had different ideas and again capitalised on Saints mistake to score a converted try from Rosney who duly obliged with the extras on 40mins to take a 19-12half (me lead.
A few home truths from the Saints management and the second half was underway. Park scored another converted try on 44 mins through Cozens, Saints responded with a well taken Liam Sadler try, Andy Cummings adding the extras 26-20. The next 15 minutes put pay to any chance of the travelling team winning this fixture as they allowed WP too much space and respect , allowing offloads and falling off tackles, Park managed 3 unanswered tries taking the score line to 47- 20 in their favour.
John Clarke managed to burrow over the line for the visitors on 67 minutes following a period of sustained pressure , but Park put the game to bed in the 70th minute with Ainsworth scoring his second of the day . The home side had a brace of yellow cards pointed in the direc(on of No18 on 71mins & captain Cozens on 72, whilst not to be outdone Saint’s Williams also took a breather on 75mins.
A4er all handbags were put away, Jon Armstrong finished the game with a well taken try for the visitors bringing the final score to 52-32 in favour of the hosts who were the be9er team on the day.
Saints will learn valuable lessons from this but none more important than the ball is precious; try and keep it for as long as possible ..

K E E P T H E B A L L ! ! … … . .
The Mavericks con(nued with their expansive running game and as a result a try fest ensued. 8 tries to one demonstrated the new commitment the Mavs are showing this year to using the en(re 15 to great effect. Some good kicking ensured we maximised the tries to a seven point gain.
Try scorers this week were the ever prolific Andy Thompson, the 'poacher' Nev Pickard (more of that later), the paternal Dan Jenner, the sniper Neil Brookes, two from our speedsters Cal Thomas and the returning Ryan Williams, I think that's about it really. An excellent all round performance combining strong, dominant forward performances and well executed and pre-planned back line moves that created space in the right places.
Port Sunlight brought a strong heavy (and tall) pack to the party, however they hadn't planned on mee(ng the dark destroyer, the ginger ninja that is the rejuvenated, revitalised and altogether impressive Mike Po9er. On an individual basis the score was Mike Po9er 2 Port Sunlight 0 as both PS props hit the dirt hurt and broken Sunlight asked for uncontested scrums. The Port Sunlight pack complaining to the ref that Mike "was chea(ng" awww bless! The ref simply confirmed that all was well in the heady atmosphere of the front row and Mike con(nued in his destruc(ve manner.
Some of the more consistent feedback I've received over the performance yesterday was how effec(ve Mike was in the forwards and although Andy Thompson was highly produc(ve in rela(on to points on the board this week’s man of the match Ytle goes to Mike 'The
Birthday Boy' PoMer for his outstanding performance in securing a dominant plaUorm in the (ght 5 that allowed opportuni(es for his team mates to put a serious score on the board. Mike had the opportunity at 5 yards out to cap off a fantas(c performance with a try only to have it snatched off him by the ever present poacher Nev Pickard who put the hip in to ensure that Mike remained off the score sheet. Don't worry Mike on your performances this season so far I'm certain it won't be long and I know from speaking to the players that the MOM award is highly deserved .
A few no(ceable men(ons, great to see the
backs firing so well and the flexibility of posi(ons
allows for a great deal of fluidity when running
lines and execu(ng moves. Ryan and Cal have
both slo9ed in to the team really effec(vely with
Mike Weatherston ge<ng some valuable game
(me as well.
Ed Byrne con(nues to be mercurial in his quiet
man role, popping up in almost every posi(on
on the park. As I've said in previous weeks it's
the individual contribu(ons that make the team
performance.
Oh!, that's right! I knew there was something
else. Andy Smith scored as well (well he had to
avoid the duck didn't he). Well done skipper.

The Saint Previews
Today’s Match This weekend, we welcome unbeaten league leaders Liverpool St. Helens to Malone Field.
The club, in its first incarna(on, was founded in 1857, which makes it “the oldest open club in the world”, according to some. Of course, there are other claimants to this pres(gious by-line, notably Blackheath, but most agree that LSH deserve the honour.
In their long and dis(nguished history, they have produced many interna(onal players and, in the person of their President, they have one of the few players who have represented their country in both the League and Union codes.
Liverpool merged with St. Helen’s RUFC in 1986 and have played at Moss Lane for thirty years. Like many sides, they struggled in the professional era, and have been up and down the northern leagues.
They are currently in the ascendant, having finished a creditable fi4h in this division last season. In their three wins this term, they have
scored over 100 points, accoun(ng for newly relegated Leigh (39-27), Bowdon (29-12) and, last week, Manchester Medics (36-12).
Last season we lost home and away, suffering a 12-38 reverse at Eastham and coming second at Moss Lane in December, 10-22. Since the Moss Lane side were relegated from North One West in 2014 (the year Wirral won that division), we had fared well at their place. In 2015-16, we triumphed in a close contest, 21-15, and the previous season, in March, we gained an honourable draw, 34-34.
Unfortunately, we have had the opposite fortune at Eastham. In November 2014, we lost a winning lead and the game 31-33, and in 2015, we were on the wrong end of a high-scoring, reverse 28-46.
Last week’s capitula(on at West Park does not bode well, especially as it brought back memories of our poor early season form last year. This is a perfect opportunity for coach McKinney and his young side to show the figh(ng spirit they displayed in the opening game at Southport.
Liverpool St Helens Football Club
The original Liverpool club's first match took place in 1857 when old boys from Rugby school challenged local boys to a game under their school rules. Liverpool Football Club were then formed, the oldest open rugby club in the world.
In 1871, the club provided four of the England team that played Scotland in the first rugby international. On 5 February 1877 another Liverpool player, Edward Kewley, was captain of England when they played Ireland in what was the first 15-a-side international. In 1914 the club had three international captains in the first XV, Ronnie Poulton-Palmer (England), F.H. Turner (Scotland) and R.A. Lloyd (Ireland). Other internationals to play for Liverpool include Fran Cotton, Maurice Colclough, Mike Slemen and Kevin Simms.
St Helens RUFC was founded in 1919 as St Helens Old Boys, the original membership being predominantly made up of former pupils of Cowley School. Internationals who played for the club include Alan 'Ned' Ashcroft, John Horton, Nigel Heslop and the current club President Ray French.
Liverpool and St Helens merged in 1986 and played at Moss Lane which had been the St Helens club’s ground. In the early years of the merger the club had two seasons in National Division One split by one season in Division Two. During this time internationals Dewi Morris and Simon Mason played for Liverpool St Helens. But afterwards it sank to Division Four and spent virtually the whole of the 1990s coming to terms with the professional era.
The combined clubs boast a total of 55 International players throughout their histories.

A fine start to the new season for all our
Juniors and Minis.
Whilst numbers are good, we always
need further recruitment, so if every
member could help in this regard then
we will have an even more thriving
sec(on.
It was great to see some of our Senior
players showing up to lend a hand with
some extra coaching and experience.
Plans are afoot for a fantas(c season
both on and off the pitch.
The boys and girls can look forward to
playing at their own age level and also
suppor(ng the Senior when they play at
home. The ball boy experience is one that
the youngsters absolutely love and it
“A fine start to the new season

The U15’s first match of the season was against Preston Grasshoppers. The refer-ee called me and the captain of the op-posi(on over and we won the toss so we were receiving .They kicked it deep down the middle and it was caught by our full back. He ran it and got tackled on the 22. We were too slow to the ruck and we lost it, but a4er a few phases we won it back by ripping the ball. But then we lost another ruck and they knocked it on from a pick up. The scrum half put the ball in and the hooker connected and knocked it back. I picked it up from the back and ran, ge<ng about ten metres before I got tackled and then we were rucking over again. The 9 passed it to our prop on a hard line and he smashed up. A4er a few phases we were too slow to the ruck again and we lost the ball. Then they just crashed up a corner for ten minutes but we managed to hold up a few tries and stop all of the other a9empts but we were playing with a man down so they had the overlap. They passed it to the wing and scored and con-verted. We kicked off and chased. We made the tackle and put their centre back. A4er a few phases they scored again where they had the overlap. The whistle blew for half (me.
We kicked to them again and they passed it out to the winger but we dri4ed and tackled him. Then some phases later they knocked it on. It was our scrum, we kicked but we didn’t get the ball back
and they kicked for touch. We then tried a move for the centre but their line speed was too quick and they took out the fly half, turned the ruck over and scored again.
The team had played well but that overlap that they had on the wing was killing us. The final whistle blew and the match was over. We had lost but we learned a lot about our new moves and we now know what to work on in training sessions so it wasn’t a big loss.

In “Across the Andes by Frog", explorer
Walter SneCerton (Michael Palin) and his
party travel to the Andes to prove his
theory that frogs are able to climb
mountains. It was the worst programme in
the series.
The Saint was reminded of this when the
news came of Anselmians’ collapse at West
Park last Saturday. “Across to Red Rocks
with the Andys”, he mused, wondering
whether the second half catastrophe would
make a half-hour comedy programme. The
result was reminiscent of our humbling by
Southport in the last game of last season.
The Saint pondered the parallels. The frogs,
less the Himalayan Sleeping frog, finally
made it to Mexico City. Will Anselmians
make it to safety at the end of the season?
History does not record the reac(on of Lord
Pollard & the Willastonistas on hearing the
score, but The Saint is told that Jim
McKenzie, fell off his pa(o with all the loose
limbed mobility of a geriatric dalek with a
gin habit and suffered a severely bruised
ego. Apparently, he was ran(ng about how
“the current 1st XV wouldn’t have got into
his sixth XV when he was playing” and,
waving his arms in an interpre(ve dance,
toppled over, recording 3.4 on the Richter
scale as he landed. He was only revived by a
huge transfusion of “Trapper’s Hat” ale.
Meanwhile Dr. Evil has fiendish plans afoot
to arrest the alarming decline of the 1st
XV’s
fortunes. The Skinster is famous for his
a9en(on to detail and has decided that the
Malone Field karma is ”frickin’ wrong.”
Accordingly, he has ordered that all Anselmian
supporters must now watch the match from
the New Chester Road side of the pitch. No
reason has been offered, and rumours of a
sigh(ng of Dr. Evil’s arch enemy, Caldee Pikee,
known as “Gold(Ex)member”, scou(ng
between the two main pitches remain
unconfirmed.
Also, Dr. Evil’s second in command, Mini Me,
refused to be drawn into specula(on that the
Interna(onal Coach of Mystery was filming a
sequel en(tled, “The Coach Who Slagged Me”
a4er his performance at West Park.
Dr. Evil is op(mis(c about the visit of Liverpool
St. Helen’s. Taking an extended training
session, he commented, “LSH will have a
frickin’ surprise when they play at Eastham,
but I don’t want to reveal my cards too early.
I’m frickin’ clever like that.
“But we need discipline and order. Those
players who claim they’ve forgo9en their kit
know we’ll probably make them wear the
smelly shorts and dirty vests from the frickin’
lost property box or, failing that, do training in
their pants. “Unfortunately, there’s nothing
we can do about frickin’ genuine notes wri9en
by soppy mums who will crumble at the first
hint of tears and write down a load of lies to
get their kids out of it.”
When it was pointed out that he was at Old
Anselmians and not Wirral Grammar School,
Dr. Evil, shrugged, grunted and mu9ered, “I’ve
given up asking frickin’ rhetorical ques(ons.
What’s the frickin’ point?” With that, he
resumed coaching, where he scampered about
in a promising sort of way. A4er that,
however, he tried gallantly, but ul(mately
failed, to teach anything of any significance
whatsoever.

Ground Force By Farmer Jones
Each week, a massive amount
of work, by a small band of
committed volunteers, goes
into maintaining our grounds.
We have been spending many hours
cuMng grass this summer because of
the amount of rain we keep geMng
and old “UCerly” must have a sore
backside with the number of hours he
has sat on the tractor, but it is all worth
it to get the pitches looking decent. More
importantly he can’t tell us the same stories
when he’s on the mower. We have used a
lot of fuel so far and thanks must go to
Steve Pilgrim for kindly allowing us to pick
up diesel from the yard.
As you may know the “tractor boys” do like
a good breakfast on a Thursday; indeed
some would say it is the only reason we
turn up and lately we have been fortunate
enough to have some guest appearances
from a big local chef. This has given us
more (me to spend on the grounds rather
than cooking. This culinary genius learned
his skills locally and lists Lord Leverhulme
and Plumb Centre as former employers.
He did want to remain anonymous but the
paparazzi released his photograph in the
previous edi(on so our thanks go to “Ester
Bloomin’ell” for feeding us so well.
Coburn came up with a great “irishism” at
last week’s match when we were ge<ng the
scoreboard ready. When asked if 1 bungee
cord would reach the two doors he replied,
“ it depends how long it is “.
It’s never dull with the tractor boys!

QUIZ ANSWERS
1. England will play three Autumn International matches at Twickenham during the “Old Mutual Wealth Series” in November 2017. England's opponents will be Argentina (11 Nov), Australia (18 Nov) and Samoa (25 Nov).
2. New Zealand women are known as “The All Black Ferns” and England’s women are “The Red Roses.”
3. Billy Vunipola. The No. 8 withdrew from the Lions squad the day after Saracens’ last game of the season against Exeter in May because of his shoulder injury. He was due to report for a training camp in Dublin but opted against travelling to Ireland, despite Warren Gatland asking him to do so.
4. Newcastle and Saracens. Just over 6000 fans turned up for a disappointing game. Saracens won 29-7.
5. James Haskell and Joe Marler. Haskell was sent to the sin-bin for grabbing Marler by the throat with both hands in the game between Wasps and Harlequins. Quins subsequently went on to win a niggly Premiership game 24-21, inflicting Wasps’ first defeat of the season.
