A Safe Haven For Newborns

By: Laura, Makia, Kayla & Eliana

MISSION

A Safe Haven for Newborns is dedicated to saving the precious lives of newborns from the dangers of abandonment and assisting pregnant girls/women in crisis.

VISION

To eliminate infant abandonment in Florida through education, prevention and community involvement and to assist pregnant women to realize a productive future.

A Safe Haven For Newborns

In A Nutshell… • “Safe Haven for Newborns” is dedicated to reaching pregnant girls and mothers before they reach the crisis stage.

•The lifeline of our organization is our 24/7 multilingual statewide referral helpline to assist pregnant women in crisis.

• Provide quick, one on one assistance accessing our extensive statewide referral database.

• Assist them as they make their decision in the best interest of their baby and themselves, whether with counseling, parenting, health related issues, adoption or confidentially placing their newborn with a "Safe Haven.“

Services

• Every call made to the organization is confidential and everyone is helped.

• It takes huge compassion and a great deal of courage to seek help instead of the tragic alternative of abandonment, often resulting in an innocent newborns death.

• A Safe Haven for Newborns where the baby is left may ask some medical history questions that will be placed in the baby’s records.

• The person leaving the baby is not required to answer any questions.

•The helpline it is a state wide, toll free, multilingual, referral helpline and available 24/7 (1-877-767-2229).

•Coordinating and assisting a mother with the entire “Safe Haven” process.

•Taking a newborn to a Safe Haven facility when it is the only option to insure the safety of the baby.

• Providing education and Safe Haven resources.

Direct Assistance

The baby must be 7 days old or less

• The first hours/days of a newborn’s life are vulnerable, therefore most urgent. • Allows a mother/father to make a constructive and life affirming decision for the infant and themselves.

• Be assured, no one is going to try to find out who you are.

What if the parents change their mind and want their baby back?

• A parent of a newborn infant left at a hospital, emergency medical services station, or fire station under the “Safe Haven” law may claim his or her newborn infant up until the court enters a judgment terminating his or her parental rights which is approximately 30 days.

The Need For Safe Heaven• There is an escalating crisis in the United States.

Safe Haven provides an alternative to a frightened girl/woman, who, in a moment of desperation, may do something drastic, destroying two lives, hers and her babies.

• The safe haven law passed in 2000 by the Florida legislature creates a safety net for both the mother and the newborn infant.

• A Safe Haven for Newborns announced “170 newborns saved from abandonment. In the twelve years since Florida passed a Safe Haven law, the number of infants abandoned in unsafe places has steadily declined with cases dwindling to zero over the last two and a half years”
