fad? • The way we teach
Children haven’t changed!
Year 7 intake
Children haven’t changed!
• “A characteristic of the normal child is he doesn't act that way very often”
• “You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance”
• “Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said”
My favourite quote
• “Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannize their teachers. “
• Socrates, 469-399 BC
What are the kids like then?
• 95% are fantastic• 4% have problems• 1% are ‘orrible
Why be a teacher….according to Joe Public….
• Holidays! • Weekends!• Short working day!• No accountability!• No stress!• Easy!
Why be a teacher – the wrong answer
The right answer!
• Because you want a job that counts for something
I’ve sold coke, pagers, and dresses… and shovelled peas…..
before I got a proper job…
So what is it really like?
• Different every day• Important• Rewarding• frustrating• Challenging
Today’s presentation
• What is School Direct?• How you apply• What the entry
requirements are
• What is it like to teach in schools today?
What is School Direct?
• School Direct allows schools to:• grow their own teachers• decide who to recruit and which subjects• form partnerships so that training is aligned and
quality is guaranteed• negotiate how the training year is delivered• have the option to employ at the end of the course
Two routes…
• School Direct Training programme (bursary)
• Open to all graduates• Funded via tuition fees• Bursaries available
• School Direct Training programme (salaried)
• Employed by the school• Salary subsidised by
Teacher Agency• Three years’ work
experience• High quality graduates• This has replaced the
GTP scheme
What does the training look like?
• Around 60 days of training activity• 120-150 days in your training schools• Teaching is divided between at least two schools
Can I afford it?
Other financial considerations?
• School Direct• Tuition fees are payable
by student, but…• Your bursary is tax free • Maintenance loans and
grants are also available
• Student loans are not available to School Direct (salaried) trainees
• Salaries are subsidised by the Teaching Agency
