ThePathologists’Assistant(PA)Programoffersstudentstheopportunitytotraininthehighlyspecializedfieldofanatomicalpathology.Thisisatwo-year,full-timeprofessionalgraduateprogram.Thefirstyeariscoursebased.Thesecondyeariscomposed of hospital rotations in autopsy and surgical pathology, a research project, and a two-month community elective at the endoftheprogram.UpongraduationallofourstudentshavefoundemploymentasPAs,manywithmultiplejobofferspriortograduation.

TheFellowshipinSurgicalPathologyallowsfortraininginoneoruptothreesurgicalpathologysubspecialtyareas.Thefellowisamemberoftherelevantsubspecialtyteam(s)andspendsapproximately75%ofhis/hertimeonclinicalservice,theremainderspentonacademic/researchactivities.Fellowsaregiventimeanddirectiontoimproveknowledge,skillsandachievements in research and in the selected areas of surgical pathology. There are opportunities to participate in medical student/residentteachingandforpresentationatdiscipline-specificseminarsandrounds.

Research-Based Programs Dr. Chandan ChakrabortyChair, Pathology Graduate Program GraduatetrainingleadingtobothMScandPhDdegreesinexperimentalpathologyisofferedonbothafull-timeandapart-timebasis.AthesisisrequiredforboththeMScandPhDdegreesinresearch-basedstream.Thecourseworkintheseprogramsisvariableandisgearedtowardsprovidingasolidfoundationforthestudents’thesiswork.Theprogramtrainsstudentsindiversefieldsincludingmolecularpathology,immunopathology,oncology,transplantpathology,neuropathology,and environmental pathology. Our students get the opportunity to use cutting-edge technologies of molecular and cellular biologytostudypathogenesis,diagnosis,preventionandtherapyofdisease.

Neuropathology Residency ProgramDr. Lee-Cyn AngProgram Director, Neuropathology Residency Program

TheoverallgoaloftheNeuropathology(NP)programistoprovideresidentswithexcellenttraininginallareasofNP.Inaddition,residentsshouldhaveagoodunderstandingofbasicandclinicalneurosciencestoactasaresourcepersoninclinicalpracticeandresearch.Aftercompletionoftraining,theresidentsshouldhavetheknowledgeandskillstopasstheRoyalCollegeExaminationandbecomecompetentpracticingneuropathologists.Theywillbeeffectiveconsultants,trainedtofulfillallthe CanMEDS Roles.

ThegoalofthetrainingprograminAnatomicalPathologyistoprovideresidentswithhighqualitytraininginallareasofanatomicalpathology.Inadditiontoreceivingtraininginallmajorareas,residentsareallowedsignificantflexibilitytotailortheprogram to suit their individual career goals and are encouraged to develop areas of scholarly interest. At the conclusion of the trainingperiod,residentshavetheskillsnecessarytopasstheRoyalCollegeexaminationandfunctionaseffectiveandskilledconsultants to their clinical colleagues.

KhanChair, Pathology BMSc Undergraduate Studies BMScprogramsinPathologybuildonthefoundationsofanatomy,biochemistry,physiology,andmicrobiologyandimmunology.Ourcoursesaredesignedtoprovidebasicmechanismsunderlyingdiseaseprocesseswithanin-depthstudyof major organ system disorders. We offer several modules in the BMSc Program including an Honors Specialization and aSpecializationinPathology,andaMajorinPathology.Inaddition,weoffercombinedmoduleswithotherdepartmentsatSchulich Medicine and Dentistry such as the Honors Specialization in Biochemistry and Pathology of Human Disease, and theHonorsSpecializationinMicrobiologyandImmunologywithPathology.

Surgical Pathology Fellowship

OurAreaofFocusedCompetence(AFC)DiplomaprograminCytopathologywasaccreditedbytheRoyalCollegeofPhysicians&SurgeonsofCanada(RCPSC)inMarch2014.ItisthefirstAFCinCytopathologyinCanadaandthefirstaccreditedAFCprograminlaboratorymedicineapartfromtransfusionmedicine.IthasrecentlybeenrecognizedasthemodelAFCcompetencybasedprogramfortheRCPSC. ThisisacompetencybasedprogramforadvancedtraininginCytopathology.Themilestonesincludeindependentcasesign-outofin-houseandconsultationcases,performanceofRapidOn-siteEvaluationsandFNAs,andparticipationinqualityassuranceactivities.Thereisaconcomitantacademicprogramwithbroadtopiccoverageincludinglabadministration,qualityassurance,medicolegalaspectsanddevelopmentofteachingskills.

Cytopathology AFC Diploma

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry offers a four-year program leading to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.Thecurriculumiscontinuallyevolvingandprovidesgraduateswiththeknowledgeandskillsnecessarytoentergeneralpractice,pursuespecialtytrainingorembarkonacademiccareers.PathologyistaughttothedentalstudentsintheformofGeneralPathologyinthefirstyear,andwithintheOralDiseasescoursesspreadoverthefirsttothirdyearsofthedentistrycurriculum.Thefinaltwoyearsofthedentistryprogramareclinicallyintensive,providingstudentswithabroadclinicalexperienceemphasizingacomprehensive,patient-centeredapproachtooralhealthcare.

OurdepartmentoffersastructuredPathologyteachingschemeforSchulichstudentsexpandedoverafour-yearperiod.DuringMed1and2years,PathologyteachingisintegratedintotheSchulichsystem-basedcurriculumintheformoflecturesandsmallgroupdiscussions.DuringMed3and4years,weprovideanin-depthexposuretoclinicallyrelevantPathologypracticethroughselective,elective,casebasedseminarseriesandcourses.Duringclerkship,ourgoalistotrainourmedicalstudentstoachievecertainpathologyexitcompetencieswebelieveagraduatingmedicalstudentshouldlearnanddemonstratein preparation for and transition to residency. Students will learn how pathology interfaces with other areas in medicine and the centralrolepathologistsplayinpatientcarebyworkingcloselywithotherphysicianshelpingthemsolvedailydiagnosticproblems.

Dr. Michele WeirChair,NovelEducationResourceDevelopment(NERDs)WorkingGroup The NERDs group is an educational interest group which provides resources and a community of practice for teaching activities,scholarshipineducationandleadershipineducationfortheDepartmentofPathologyandLaboratoryMedicine(PaLM).TheNERDsvisionandmissionalignwiththoseofPaLMwiththeadditionof:creatingandsupportinganenvironmentinourdepartmentforplanning,developing,implementing,evaluatingandsharingsustainableinnovativeeducationalactivitiesinvolvingteaching across all disciplines as well as scholarship and leadership in education. The NERDs have open forums in alternate months for our faculty and learners to discuss hot topics within teaching activities, scholarship and leadership in education.

TheDepartmentofPathologyandLaboratoryMedicinealsohostswell-receivedCMEeventseveryyear.TheseeventsincludepresentationsbyvariousspeakersfromtheLHSCPaLMDepartmentandfromoutsideinstitutions.Theseeducationaleventsaredesignedfor,andattendedprimarilyby,communitypathologistsandresidents.
