Sculpture I Final

Sculptural Shoes Shoes are familiar, recognizable and necessary

objects around the world. A shoe is a functional object…but have you ever

thought about creating shoes as a sculpture? For this final project you will

research shoes from a variety of cultures and functions, analyze shoes in art, and create a work of art based on the shoe.

Shoes as an Art Form

You will create a piece of artwork based on the shoe. Your sculpture should have an overarching theme/concept and take one of the following directions… A shoe (or pair of shoes)

that are created with non-conventional materials

OR An alteration of a shoe

(or pair of shoes) to create a piece of art that is no longer a shoe

Your Final Challenge

Materials & Processes Your sculptural shoes may be constructed

using any material or combination of the materials explored in Sculpture I, as well as any other materials, processes and ideas you may bring into class or research on your own.

The basis of your sculpture should either start with a shoe and turn it into something other than a shoe, OR look like a shoe created using alternative materials.

Motivation & InspirationYou will need to show and explain your inspiration for this piece. To help you start brainstorming ideas you should explore the work of the shoe artists below as well as look through the Bata Museum’s collection.Shoe Artists:

Don’t ForgetYour sculpture must also tell a story or have an overarching theme or concept. Think of something that is relevant or important to you.

What You Will Do1. Research Cultures and Shoe Artists to

begin your concept development. 2. Complete the sketchbook packet.3. Meet with teacher to review ideas and

plans.4. Using materials you have planned,

inspiration from a culture or artist, and your sketches and notes, create your own shoe sculpture.

5. Complete and hand-in your final project, sketchbook pages, and rubric.

Tips Detailed research and planning will improve

your final project. Consider the elements and principles – how

can you incorporate them or make them a focus of your sculpture?

Go beyond the expected and ordinary. This is a FINAL project…my expectations are high!

Craftsmanship and creativity are keys to success.

Go back to your planning throughout process, but don’t be afraid to modify your plans if the piece is not turning out as you had hoped.

Grading Breakdown:This project is worth 20% of your overall grade

Sketchbook assignment is worth 70 points and 50% of the final “exam” grade

Final sculpture is worth 52 points and 50% of the final “exam” grade

ExpectationsThis project should be treated as a final exam: your ideas and work should be original because this is your final: no part can be turned in late - there will be no make-ups, re-dos, or additional time and materials provided you will be required to solve problems on your own (not rely on teacher to give you answers), however you can talk things through with teacher or classmates – start with an idea first. all portions of this project must be submitted by the due date, to receive full credit
