Sea Lane House is renowned for being the only house inBritain to have been wholly designed by the greatBauhaus-trained architect and designer Marcel Breuer. Asone of the most distinguished examples of 20th centuryarchitecture on the South Coast it has been Grade II listed.It was designed as a 6-bedroom house in 1936, whilstBreuer was working in collaboration with the Britisharchitect F.R.S. Yorke. The house has been owned by thesame family since the 1940s and remains largely unalteredfrom the original designs. Many original features remain,however it is now in need of some updating.

Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) is widely recognised as one ofthe most important Modern architects and designers of thetwentieth century. Born in Hungary, he was one of themost successful graduates of the famous Bauhaus inGermany, a radical school for the creative arts that isfrequently referred to as the birthplace of Modernism.Breuer left Germany in the 1930s due to the rise of theNazi party, moving to London for two years (during whichtime he designed Sea Lane House) then on to the UnitedStates, where he spent the rest of life and where hedesigned such celebrated buildings as the Whitney Museumof American Art in New York. The house is set in a tranquil location approx 50m from thesea on two private estates with no through traffic. The localshops of East Preston are a 15 min walk away.
