Sections 11.1: Square Roots & 11.2: Approximating Square Roots

Pg.533, 540

Objectives & Vocabulary1. Evaluate expressions using square roots (11.1).2. Approximate square roots of numbers (11.2).

• Square root (pg.533): of a number n, the square root is the number m which, when multiplied by itself, equals n.

• Perfect square (pg.533): numbers that are squares of integers [ex: 4 and 25 are perfect squares].

• Radical expression (pg.534): an expression involving a radical sign (or square root).

• Irrational number (pg.541): cannot be written as a quotient of two integers, and the decimal form of an irrational number neither terminates nor repeats [ex: the square root of 11].

• Real number (pg.541): all rational and irrational numbers (any number is a real number).
