Summer is winding down and people are coming back from their Vacations. I'm starting to see more friends at the bridge table again. Good news!
More good news is the end of summer is also the time for our
FALL SECTIONAL Friday, September 6 in Orangevale.
Be sure to make your plans to join us to see old friends, sharpen your game (with more points) and socialize a bunch. We are encouraging you to bring a donation of cookies and brownies to share. Thanks!
On a sad note, I am sorry to hear Al Beckner, one of the founders of the Folsom
Bridge club, as well as long time director and teacher there, passed away on August 22nd. Folsom Bridge Center will hold a Memorial Game on September 19, reservations required and all proceeds to benefit Twin Lakes Food Bank. See pg 12. Al also taught the Friday morning 299er session at the U505 Sectionals for many years. Let's remember Al by coming to the sectional in Orangevale!
Al was also my predecessor as director of the Folsom Saturday game and was very gracious in passing the baton to me. One time, I walked in to Folsom early on a Friday and happened to catch him towards the end of his bridge lesson. Seeing as he only had two students that day and bridge is a four handed game, he invited me to help by playing as his partner. The lesson was worth remembering - when to decline your partner's invitation to slam. I still use that lesson today. Al and I also had our deep, fundamental disagreement - he was an "Aces" guy and I was one of those Hardy Heretics. We argued about it a few times but it was always friendly with lots of joking amongst the disparagements of each other's system.
September 27-29 FALL NLM SECTIONAL at SBC
One more item: It is time to nominate new Board of Directors and we need you—please give some thought to how you might serve our great organization. Talk with any board member, step up and volunteer. You’ll be glad you did!

Congratulations and thank you Al for 35 years of dedication to excellence in bridge. His party at Folsom Bridge Center included 13 tables of bridge players!

FREE LECTURE -
SATURDAY MORNINGS
11 a.m.
Before the 299er game.
Discusses hands played on the prior Saturday, plus a topic of
Joy O’Dell's choice.
Dear Unit 505 Members, I’ve been going through old newsletters—looking for pictures of Al Beckner—but finding it a nostalgic walk through the last 10 years! My first issue in October 2009 included Bob Olson’s retirement, later came Barbara Mormon’s, John McMurdie’s and Al Beckner’s, then there was John and Joy O’Dell-Hughes wedding at SBC . . . numerous Sectionals and Unit Games! I remember each event. Mostly, I remember the people, such as the 90+ year olds going strong and the 10 year olds (although they are now taller than I am!)
I wanted to grab so many pictures, but realized there were toooo many and I’d still leave some out!
I do want to say thank you to the many good people—board presidents and members, club owners, contributors and editors, directors and teachers, for your help and support!
To all the members of Unit 505, I will miss you and wish you the best for the future.
Love, Beth
Beth’s Retirement Plan . . . at least for awhile!
