ADORATION CHAPEL The patron of Eucharistic Adorers, priest, stigmatist, mystic, &
miracle workers, St. Padre Pio was passionately in love with the
Holy Eucharist. He wrote, “Let me recognize you as your disci-
ples did at the breaking of the bread, so that the Eucharistic com-
munion [may] be the light which disperses the darkness, the force
which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.” “In the most holy
sacrament of the Eucharist, in this sacrament of love, we have
true life, a blessed life & true happiness.” “Let us spend our
whole lives giving thanks to the divine Father who, in an excess
of love for us, sent His only begotten Son & our most sweet lover.
Protected, covered & defended by the Presence of this dear Lord,
let us stand before Him [in the Holy Eucharist] & pray with the
humility of the creature & the confidence & freedom of the
child.”
~From Padre Pio prayer card

PASTOR’S COLUMN The chief apostle of Gaul (that is ancient France) was the
fourth-century missionary-Bishop, St. Martin of Tours. Born in
what is now Hungary, and originally a soldier (though he disliked
soldiering), Martin eventually came to Gaul and founded the
monastery of Liguge. Ten years later he had acquired such a
good reputation that the people of Tours demanded him for their
Bishop. As Bishop of Tours he became widely noted for his pi-
ety, his tireless missionary efforts among the pagans of the coun-
tryside, and his labors as an international churchman.
When he was about eighty, Bishop Martin had a knowledge
that death was drawing near, and he announced it to his disci-
ples. With tears in their eyes, they begged him not to leave
them. Torn between his desire for heaven and his desire to serve
his flock, he prayed to God, “Lord, if your people still need me I
will not refuse the task. Your will be done!” God did not change
the schedule. The fatal illness attacked Martin soon after, while
he was visiting a remote part of his diocese. But he had left the
decision up to God.
“…I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is the
far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for
your benefit.” (Philippians 1:23-24 - Today’s second reading.)
~Rev. Edward J Smith
