THIS IS NOT “ROCKET SURGERY”: THE REMODELING IS UNDERWAY

In the District College and Credential Completion Network OSSE Scholars Program College Retention Initiative Adult College Completion Initiative (and much more!)

And Across the Country* CSU-San Diego, Riverside, Long Beach Washington State University USC Virginia Commonwealth University UNC-Wilmington Georgia State University Northeastern University (and many more!)

* The Education Trust: Advancing to Completion http://www.edtrust.org/dc/press-room/news/advancing-to-completion

BUT REMODELING IS HARD WORK!Leadership Commitment

1. Values-based culture change

2. Reallocation of resources

3. Relentless focus on data4. Culture of shared

accountability5. Partnerships with K-12,

community, employers

Redesigned Practices

1. Cohesive core curriculum2. Simplified student-

pathways3. High quality student

supports 4. Proactive/intrusive

advising5. Cohort/project based

learning

SO WHAT IS AN ADVISOR/MENTOR TO DO?

BE A VOCAL ADVOCATE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY STUDENT• Demand a relentless focus on

transparent data to drive decisions: stop doing what doesn’t work

• Join or help create networks and partnerships supporting students’ college access and success

• Help colleges do their part and hold them accountable

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A 21ST CENTURY SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR 21ST CENTURY STUDENTS

1. Create partnerships with K-12, faculty, employers, and the community

2. Focus on pathways to college and career (its about learning AND jobs)

3. Infuse technology to expand capacity, improve quality, and reduce costs

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A 21ST CENTURY ADVISING/MENTORING SYSTEM FOR 21ST CENTURY STUDENTS

4. Work to provide advisors/mentors who look like the students you serve

5. Support accelerated progress to degrees6. Focus on the whole student: financial,

cultural, academic needs7. Focus on transitions (Middle to HS, HS to

college, transfer, college to work)

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A 21ST CENTURY ADVISING/MENTORING SYSTEM FOR 21ST CENTURY STUDENTS

8. Create one stops to ensure students find all financial supports available

9. Provide students/parents with information on the value of college and the multiple paths to a credential

10. Demand information on college outcomes and help students “match” to the college that is best for them

COLLEGE FOR EVERY STUDENT: THEIR LIVES AND OUR FUTURE DEPEND ON IT
