WHAT IS SETHU CANAL(SETHU KALVAI)

• The Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project proposes linking the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping canal.

• The sea is quite shallow, with a depth of less than 10 meters across most of its extent. Much of its seabed consists of limestone rock. It formed part of a land bridge that joined Sri Lanka to the continent ofAsia during the last ice age.

• • The coast of India does not have a continuous navigation channel

connecting the east and west coasts.  Currently the ships coming from the west coast of India and other western countries with destination in the east coast of India and also in Bangladesh, China etc have to navigate around Srilankan coast.

WHY- CANAL NEED• The existing water way is shallow and not sufficient for the movement of

ships.  This is due to the presence of a shallow region known as Adam’s bridge, located southeast of Rameswaram near Pamban, which connects the Talimannar Coast of Srilanka.

• Due to these factors, the ships originating from west of India and destined for Chennai, Ennore, Vishakapatnam, Paradeep, Haldia and Kolkata have to travel around Srilankan coast resulting in increase of travel distance and time.  Apart from these ships belonging to Indian Navy and Coast Guard need also to traverse around Srilanka.

In order to reduce the steaming distances between the East and West Coast of India and to improve the navigation within territorial waters of India, a navigation channel connecting the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay through north of Adam's Bridge has been envisaged  so that the ships moving between the east and west coasts of India need not go around Sri

Lanka.

HISTORY OF THE PLAN

• It is usually descibed as 150 years of Tamil's dream to bring in Economic prospects for the Costal districts of Tamil Nadu.

• In 1955, for the first time since Independence, the Government of India constituted the Sethusamudram Project Committee under A Ramaswamy Mudaliar to examine the feasibility and desirability of connecting the Gulf of Mannar with Palk Bay and its impact on the port of Tuticorin.

BJP & CONGRESS

• The committee recommended that the canal project be linked to the Tuticorin Harbour Project and that both projects be undertaken simultaneously.

• The cost of the joint, project was then estimated at Rs.9.98 crore. The Sethusamudram Project Committee report was, however, put in cold storage. In 1963, the government sanctioned only the Tuti-corin Port project.

• In 1994, the Tamil Nadu government appointed the Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services in Chennai to appraise and revalidate a 1983 report. The new report, submitted in March 1996, further revised the project cost to Rs.760 crore for 31 feet draft.

Hope on the project was revived in January 1999 when defence minister George Fernandes announced that the government would complete the digging of the Sethusamudram channel in three years.

UNSTABILITY OF CONGRESS(USUAL)

• This was backed by the prime minister Vajpayee’s assurance that his government was committed to the project. Indeed, the government took a concrete step towards the execution of the project when Union finance minister Yashwant Sinha, in his Budget 2000-01, allocated Rs.4.8 crore for a feasibility study of the Sethusamudram project.

• Finally, the United Progressive Alliance Government of India

headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the inauguration of the project on June 2, 2005

SUDDEN OPPOSE –WHY – POLITICAL

REASON- USING RELIGIOUS FAITH -BJP

• Ironically the Sethusamudram Ship canal project currently opposed by the BJP and Sangh Parivar for votebank Politics was cleared when L.K.Advani was the Indian Home Minister.

COMPARISON – SUEZ CANAL

• SUEZ CANAL – EGYPT - (WORLD FIRST & LARGEST SEA CANAL DURING 18 TH CENTURY . – 195 KM LONG

• PANAMA CANAL - WORLD SECOND LARGEST

SEA CANAL – CONNECTING AMERICA CONTINENT TO OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD – DURING 19 TH CENTURY – 75 KM LONG

• SETHU CANAL – MAY BE THIRD CANAL

BUT BECOME SECOND LARGEST CANAL OF THE WORLD BECAUSE – 167 KM IN LENGTH. “INDIA SHOULD NOT MISS THE CHANCE”

RELIGIOUS BELIEF

• JEWS ,CHRISTIANS & MUSLIMS ARE • BELIEVE THAT THE SAND MIXWD LIME STONE

BRIDGE WAS CONSTRUCTED BY ADAM (THE FIRST MAN OF THE WORLD )

• HINDUS BELIEVE THAT THE BRIDGE WAS CONSTRUCTED BY KING RAMA & HIS TROOPS

• SCIENTIST & ARCHAELOGIST SAYS THAT IT IS NOT A BRIDGE BUT ONLY SAND BULGE DUE TO SHIFT OF OCEAN ( ACCORIND TO BIG BANG THEORY )

SOLUTION – RAM SETHU CANAL

• NO NEED TO CRITICISE THE BELIEF OF ANY COMMUNITY . BUT WE NEED GROWTH FOR OUR COUNTRY.

• AS PER OUR HINDU BROTHERS BELIEF WE CAN CHANGE PROJECT NAME AS “ RAM SETHU CANAL” – THE GOD WILL NOT STAND AGAINST THE GROWTH OF HUMAN KIND

• INDIA SHOULD MADE THE WORLD RECORD .

• ANALYSE & TAKE DECISION BY THINKING THE FUTURE GENERATION
