Setting and Mood Sept 8, 2011

OBJ: How does setting impact character, mood, and plot?

HW: Setting picture from your novel. Include 4 quotes that relate to the setting and identify the mood.

Warm Up: What is the setting and how does it impact the mood?

- the taste of salty popcorn- your feet sticking to the floor- the crack of the baseball bat- the smell of hot dogs- the stands filled with a sea of red and white- the hot sun beating on your shoulders

- the sound of the waves crashing on the shore- the soft sand squishing between your toes- the warm breeze flowing through your hair- the crystal blue water- the smell of sunscreen

How does this beach setting compare to the previous beach setting?

- the dark of night creeping in around you- the chilling breeze sends shivers up your spine- the crack of a stick breaking behind you- the smell of rotting leaves and soil- the sense of being watched

As I stepped out of my apartment building, I was overwhelmed by the steamy heat rising from the asphalt. It was difficult to breathe. Horns blared and cars rushed by. I tried to signal for a cab, but none of the drivers noticed me. The inviting smell of hot dogs made my stomach rumble, but I had no time to eat. Three city blocks - could I make it? I started running on foot. Sweat poured down my face, soaking the back of my neck, gluing my shirt to my body.

With your partner, create a bulleted list of setting details that create a certain mood.

On your own, write a paragraph describing the setting, creating a specific mood. A bulleted list is a good way to get started.
