ANNOUNCEMENTS
For over 100 years, Catholic Big Sisters & Big Brothers (CBSBB) has provided one-to-one mentor-ing services for the city’s Catholic and non-Catholic children, ages 10 to 18. CBSBB’s mentoring pro-gram is unique in that it focuses on strengthening the child’s entire family, while training volunteers on how to be friends and guides to a young person in need. INTERESTED BIG SISTERS AND BIG BROTHERS:
Almost half of New York City children live in a single parent household, while 64% of households headed by single mothers fall below the poverty line. Even just a little bit of support can have a powerful and long lasting impact on these families. They want a role model for their kids, someone who can give them guidance when they need it and point them in the right direction. YOU can be that role model – please consider becoming a mentor today! And if you are not confident that you can make the commitment of being a mentor, you can still be in-volved in our mentor recruitment efforts by spread-ing the word about CBSBB to your coworkers, alumni groups, and other social networks. Contact us at 212 475-3291 x502 or at voluteers@cbsbb.org for more information about becoming a mentor, or Ryan Sheppard at rsheppard@cbsbb.org for more information about our volunteer recruitment efforts.
INTERESTED LITTLE SISTERS, LITTLE BROTH-ERS, AND PARENTS: A mentor is a caring, con-sistent, and committed adult friend, and can be a powerful ally in a young person’s life. In addition to being positive role models and opening young people up to new experiences and ideas, mentors like to have fun! CBSBB provides wrap-around support including match supervision, counseling services and skill learning workshops for Bigs, Littles, and Parents, to ensure a quality mentoring experience for everyone involved. All services are provided free of charge. Contact us at 212 475-3291 x501 or at famiies@cbsbb.org for more information about getting a mentor for you or your child ages10 to 17.
Basic program requirements include: a 1 year com-mitment to the match relationship and 8 hours a month spent with your Big or Little.

Peter called the people together to choose a replacement for Judas Iscariot. Two men were nominated. After prayer, lots were drawn and the choice fell to Matthias.

SECOND READING 1 John 4:11-16

GOSPEL READING John 17:11b-19
Jesus prayed to the Father to guard and protect the believers from the evil one: “I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”
O God, by whose name we are protected,
sanctify in truth the disciples gathered by
Jesus to be your people in this world.
Pour our your Spirit every day, that,
remaining in this world but not belonging to
it, we may bear witness to your own
abiding love, made known to us in our
Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God
for ever and ever.

WAITING PATIENTLY FOR PENTECOST
Did you ever wonder why doctors’ clients are called “patients”? If you’ve ever sat in a
waiting room you catch on pretty quickly that patience is a virtue. We often wait for
something extraordinary or significant: a birthday, graduation, wedding, discharge from
the military, retirement. We mark the time; we wait for the “big day”. Whether it comes
in the mail or by telephone, we wait for news of winning the lottery, a letter from a loved
one, acceptance into college, news about a new job, results of a medical test, or a refund
from the IRS. It involves a mixture of excitement and dread: Will they call? Will the letter
arrive? Will the news be good? And if the expected news doesn’t come, we wait another
24 hours, wondering: Will it come tomorrow?
Often in waiting a sort of community develops. Perfect strangers become comrades, if not
friends, supporting and praying for one another, cheering each other on, and performing
random acts of kindness. We share stories about our lives, our struggles, our hopes, our
fears. Once the personal crisis is resolved, we go separate ways, most never to see one
another again. Yet in the waiting we’ve been awakened to the possibility of how we might
touch others’ lives.
The Apostles had followed Jesus and observed him as he spoke profound words and did
astonishing things. Catching a hint of his greatness, they began to believe that the
waiting would surely end in glory: except that the glory came in the form of a cross,
outside Jerusalem’s walls, and what kind of glory is that? As Jesus talked about the
suffering he was to face, he prayed that they would be one. But, in the end, instead
of being one they one-by-one abandoned Jesus. They never really understood.
However, between Ascension Day and Pentecost, the disciples prayed. They began to
pray and pray and pray some more. How hard it is for us to pray like that. But they
prayed for ten days. Why? Was it to change God’s mind? Was it to beg God for something
they wanted but He didn’t want to give? No. I think it was to change their hearts.
Someone said, “Prayer moves the hand of God.” And that is true. But it also changes us.
As we pray, the Spirit leads us, and moves us, and gives us insight and ideas. He
illuminates any darkness in our hearts. He heals. He forgives. He empowers.
He regenerates us. And after we have prayed through – we can go out in the power of
the Holy Spirit.
