Project Roots

Contributing factors:• Historical use of Math diagnostics• Student Success involvement and analysis• Peer Tutoring and Outside Tutoring indicators• CMP results and discussions

Project Goals

• Analysis of First Year incoming students• Resources for better student preparation for college

math• Means of assisting/rerouting math pathways of at-risk

students in math• Increased collaboration between College and

Secondary Math Faculty• Increased collaboration between math faculty• Better math support facilities and resources

Collaborated with local High Schools• Met with Heads of Mathematics

Status in 2009

• Created algorithmic assessment test• Used content coverage recommended by HofM Mar 08• Custom questions on MapleSoftTA• Administered to 350 Tech students in weeks 1 – 3

Identified 22 topics for math preparation• Prepared pdf modules for 11 topics• Lessons• Support questions

Created a math website• Math Modules• Access to Assessment Test• Other math resources

Path Forward

• Capitalize on increased sharing and interaction between math faculty

• Make Diagnostic Test available earlier to incoming first year students

• Recommend Modules over the summer before starting their program

• Receive help from HS teachers in May/June

Path Forward

• Create remaining 11 modules

• Expand math modules to include unit tests for use in alternate routes/pathways for unsuccessful students

• Use assessment test results and learnings to continue to lobby for restructuring of math pathways at SLC
