Poverty Tourism: Immoralor Illuminating?in GLOBAL POVERTY
Poverty tourism isn't just a chance for well-heeledWesterners to take photos and gape at the poor. Formany communities, it's also a way to support localeconomies and provide much-needed attention andjobs. Poverty tourism doesn't just have a positiveimpact on the tourist -- it helps the community beingtoured, as well.
Action: Tell the House to FundCrucial Services for HumanTrafficking Survivors
Legislation addressing human trafficking survivors rarelygets much attention, but that changed last month whenmore than 5000 Change.org members asked aCongressional subcommittee to support crucial fundingfor survivors and the those who serve them. The bill waspassed and now on President Obama's desk forsignature.
Give Homeless Kids a Place toGo in the Cold!
Blogger Diane Nilan recently reported on how the mainhomeless shelter in Grand Junction, Colorado would nothouse families during the day, despite the freezing coldweather. Change.org members responded by emailingmayor Bruce Hill, calling on the city to find a way toprovide services during the day for homeless children. The city soon responded, acknowledged the oversight, and reported that it had secured a warm location forchildren and families during the day.
Change.org raises awareness about importantcauses and empowers people to take action.

What is up with the bundling and packages?!By booboo12, 3 days ago
I'm just a bit saddened that Dell's increasing the use of bundling and forcing people to choose specificpackages just to get certain options. While bundles were available before, you were always able tomake adjustments to your system build a'la carte. What was so wrong with that? I tried to help a friendconfigure a Inspiron 1464, with only a 9 cell battery as a additional option, the rest of the config wouldbe base. Can't do that, at least online. Instead, he'd have to add 400 dollars to the base price of 549just to get the 9 cell battery and end up with stuff he won't ever need or use: see here Needless tosay, he wen't elsewhere for a computer.
Bring back the ability to pick from all options individually when in the configurator. Some people don'twant to be roped into an expensive bundle.

Five Ways Nonprofit Organizations Can ReallyConnect on Twitter
Posted by: Debra Askanase In: Uncategorized
Really engaging with stakeholders is critical to creating stronger organizationalrelationships, but it is relatively difficult to really engage followers on Twitter. Having aconversation with followers is one of the easiest way of engaging, but it is hard tohave a conversation with every one of your followers (especially if you have morethan 100). Here are five ways that nonprofit organizations are creating spaces for realengagement on twitter.
1. Engage Followers with a Live Chat
Hebrew University joined Twitter a month ago and wanted to find a way to connectwith their followers. Two days ago they held their first live twitter chat with MayaSigal, a victim of the 2002 Hebrew University cafeteria bombing. The live chatcoincided with an anniversary ceremony honoring the victims of the bombing to beheld the following day.
According to Molly Livingstone of Hebrew University’s Public Relations andDevelopment Department, “we wanted to take the academic institution and make it amore personal place. We want to engage and have a community. We decided that alive chat is a great way to reach out to people. We wanted our first live chat to be withMaya Sigal because the terrorist bombing was personal attack on the Universityitself.” According to Livingstone, the live chat resulted in many new followers, andmore direct messages to the University. Livingstone views direct messages fromfollowers to mean that the University has created a more intimate relationship with afollower.
2. Ask people to sign a petition
Several online platforms enable people to create and start petitions on Twitter. Act.lyand tiny petition are among the most popular of the platforms. Greenpeace USAhas started a petition to get Trader Joe’s to adopt a sustainable seafood policy.
Here is a screen shot of the petition on act.ly:

A lack of communication can be a major barrier for grassroots non-
governmental organisations (NGOs) working in developing countries.
FrontlineSMS is the first text messaging system created exclusively with
this problem in mind.
By leveraging basic tools already available to most NGOs — computers and
mobile phones — FrontlineSMS enables instantaneous two-way
communication on a large scale. It’s easy to implement, simple to
operate, and best of all, the software is free. You just pay for the
messages you send in the normal way.
FRONTLINESMS ALLOWS YOU TO TEXT
MESSAGE WITH LARGE GROUPS OF
PEOPLE ANYWHERE THERE IS A MOBILE
SIGNAL.
“We want people to know that if they are trying to rig the election,
there could be someone behind them and that person may send a
text message saying what happened.”
— Emauwa Nelson, Human Emancipation Lead Project, Nigeria
“Based in Africa in a country where broadcast technology is
controlled by a dictatorial government, this software has enabled
me to communicate with the public at large. I am able to run my
project without drawing unnecessary attention to myself—a good
thing in this neck of the woods.”

Calling all failures! On April 14 we're hosting thefirst FAILfaire featuring a close look at ICT andmobile development projects that have crashed, burned, and simply FAILED.
While we often focus on highlighting successesand gains in this field, it's no secret that manyprojects just don't work - some aren't scalable, some aren't sustainable, some can't get aroundbureaucratic hoops, and many fail due tocompletely unanticipated barriers. FAILfaire is aplatform to openly and honestly discuss failuresso that we can learn from what hasn't worked in the past in order to make our future projectsstronger and better.
This is where YOU come in. Have you been a part of a project that flopped? Maybe the projectused the wrong technology for its region. Maybe it didn't engage the intended community. Didnot take culture, people, or both into consieration. Or maybe the rollout was too rushed. Whateverthe reason, we want to hear from you.
