Tip 1 - Be clear what social media is

powerful and purposeful

turned social

Digital tools that allow people to create, share

or exchange information, ideas and media through a network of 'following'

or being ‘followed'.

Social Media isn’t a fad, it’s a fundamental

shift in the way we communicate.

Common characteristics

[Bray, 2012]

social media challenges traditional

models

social media allows people to

communicate

social media allows people to collaborate

social media gives people an audience

social media services reverse the hierarchy and are built from the

bottom up

social media is open and transparent

Studies have shown that students do best when based in educational settings that challenge traditional models and reverse the hierarchy,

allow young people to communicate and collaborate, that

provide authentic audience for children’s work and exist within systems that are both open and

transparent. [Bray, 2012]

However, the question is not whether we should use these

platforms, but how. [Belshaw, 2015]

Tip 2 - Be clear why you want to use it

There is effort involved

It is a constantly changing environment

One thing that social networks have brought us is the ability to follow the

everyday work and contact people who, in previous generations, would have

been inaccessible. [Belshaw, 2015]

Students can follow debates that public intellectuals and experts in a particular field are having today. This can

lend a vibrancy and freshness to learning that textbooks and

other ‘static’ media cannot provide. [Belshaw, 2015]

The ‘under 13’ issue

There is a difference between registering to

use a social media service and the

viewing a social media page.

I find Twitter hugely professionally useful…

…however I have always struggled to get

meaningful engagement with
