SOCKET WELD FITTINGS

What is a Socket Weld fitting?Socket Weld fittings are a

member of the ‘high-pressure fittings’ family, the pipe being interpolated into the recessed area of the fitting.

In conjunction to the fitting, fillet-type seal welds helps in connecting the pipe to the fitting, to form a leak proof pipe structure.

Pipes with small diameters have Socket Weld fittings.

Uses of Socket Weld FittingsIndustrial processes use Socket Weld fittings for:These fittings affix pipes

sending combustible, toxic or valuable substances, and steam up to 300 to 600 PSI

They promote peaceful flow of the inner fluid media.

Their availability comes in three pressure classes mainly Class 3000, Class 6000 and Class 9000

Used only in areas where there is permanent pipe-work, these fittings are produced in terms of ASTM standards.

Advantages of Socket Weld Fittings

These fittings cost less as they needs no special preparations similar to Butt Weld fittings

This fitting cannot enter the bore of the pipe

Likewise the pipe does not require to be beveled for weld preparation.

They are an alternative to threaded fittings

Disadvantages of Socket Weld Fittings

As there is a gap left between the pipe and the Socket Weld fitting during installation (as per the Socket Welding assembly), these gaps tend to catch corrosion inside.

These fittings cannot be used in corrosive environments

They are not suitable in radioactive systems as the solid build-up between the gaps cause problems in operation and maintenance of the pipeline.

The SW fitting doesn’t pass through the bore of the pipe, the crevice between them leads to difficulties in cleaning.
