SPRING 2012
THANKYOU FOR 37YEARS OF SERVICE… !
John Krafka
After 37 years of service to Georgia State University, JohnKrafka officially retired at the end of November. Mostcannot imagine the growth and change of the Universityand the Department of Recreational Services over theyears, nor can anyone sum up ones’ career in a few shortparagraphs.
John wore many hats over the years and played a criticalrole in the planning and construction of the StudentRecreation Center, but he will be most recently missed asthe Senior Associate Director for Facilities. In this role, heoversaw all department on- and off-campus facilities, aswell as coordinated all facility projects, security, technologyand many additional day-to-day operational aspects of thedepartment.
John could be seen early in the morning working out in thepool or the exercise room. But, he may recently be bestremembered as the one who accidently struck formerGovernor Sonny Purdue with a racquetball racquet during afriendly game which required a few stiches for theGovernor.
In 1980, John organized the first annual “van stuff ” with73 Georgia State students stuffed into a 1970 Dodge van. This event eventually won honors and was entered into the
Guinness Book ofWorld Records for breaking the world’srecord for van stuffing.
John began his tenure at Georgia State in 1974 fresh outof graduate school from the University of Iowa. Over theyears he was either directly or indirectly involved with mostof the department programming areas. His involvementwith Indian Creek Recreation Area may be one of hisgreatest accomplishments; with hundreds of groups andthousands of participants using the facilities over the yearsfor meetings, retreats, team-building events, pool parties, swim lessons, tennis classes and sand volleyball games. Hisinvolvement in the 1995 Lodge renovation was critical tothe success of the future of this jewel in the GSU Crown.
It is difficult to sum up such a long and rewarding career orto list the many accomplishments a single person can con-tribute over so many years. But John Krafka will always beknown as the big guy at the rec center who onemoment may be chatting with our student employees andthe next serving one of the University administrators orgovernment officials.
From all of us in Recreational Services, we wish John a longand healthy retirement and look forward to his continuedinvolvement in many aspects of GSU. Thank You John…!

What do people say about the Touch the EarthChallenge Program?“The ultimate proof of the success of this program waswalking into class the next day and looking at all myclassmates in a completely different light. They were no longerjust people filling a chair in the classroom, they were now myfriends, people I can talk to, trust and depend on.”
~Lindsey William, MGS 3400
“Overall, I enjoyed the Ropes Course and wish that otherstudents could have the same opportunity to participate in it. Ithelped me to build new relationships with my classmates andlearn to trust people more. Also, I was able to climb trees andlearned how to walk on ropes. I can tell now my friends andfamily that I do other stuff besides study while attendingGeorgia State.”
