***to all who volunteered their time, donated food, planned, and attended the Pancake Supper on Oc-tober 15th to raise money for the Athletic Program. It was nice to see so many Prairie Catholic School students donating their time and interacting with the families, parishioners and community mem-bers that help support their catholic education. We had a great turn-out and will be able to offset gym-nasium costs with the profit.

On 2 November we remember the Holy Souls. When I was an altar boy I remember the Holy Souls
played an important part in our spirituality. On All
Souls day the priest offered three Masses and people
came to visit the Church not only for the Mass but also
to gain the plenary indulgence for the Holy Souls. Peo-
ple often had Masses offered for the Holy Souls know-
ing that when they reach heaven they would assist the
living with their prayer. It seems to me that devotion to
the Holy Souls has been neglected in this age and we
need to be reminded again that our loved ones who
have gone to God are still loving us and praying for us.
This is a day specially set apart that we may remem-
ber and pray for our dear ones who have gone to their
eternal reward, and who are currently in a state of on-
going purification. From time immemorial, people of
all religions have believed in the immortality of the
soul, and have prayed for the dead. The Jews, for ex-
ample, believed that there was a place of temporary
bondage from which the souls of the dead would re-
ceive their final release. The Jewish Talmud states that
prayers for the dead will help to bring greater rewards
and blessings to them. Since Jesus in no way contra-
dicted this ancient belief, the efficacy of prayers for
those who have died was incorporated by the infant
Church in its teaching and practice. Evidence suggests
that the belief dates back to the first century of the
Church. “Remember us who have gone before you, in
your prayers,” St. Augustine remarked that he used to
pray for his deceased mother remembering her request:
“When I die, bury me anywhere you like, but remember
to pray for me at the altar.”
The Catholic Church understands the Communion of
Saints as a relationship of love joining the living and
the faithful departed. The saints, both in Heaven and in
purgatory, pray for us, and we pray both to the saints in
heaven and for those in purgatory, that they may
swiftly enter the Beatific Vision.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes Purga-
tory as the “final purification of the elect, which is en-
tirely from the punishment of the damned (1031) How
do we help the “holy souls?” The Catechism of the
Catholic Church (No. 1032) recommends prayer for the
dead in conjunction with the offering of the Eucharistic
Sacrifice. The CCC also encourages “almsgiving, in-
dulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf
of the dead.” All these prayerful acts are to be con-
ducted as matters of faith, and not as something magi-
cal. The greatest act is to offer Mass for the dead, be-
cause in this One Sacrifice, the merits of our Lord Jesus
are applied to the dead. Hence this reconciling offering
of the Lord is the greatest and most perfect prayer,
which we can offer for the dead in their state of purifi-
cation. Let us not forget to pray for our dear departed,
have Masses offered for them, visit their graves, and
make daily sacrifices for them.

We welcome Father Sebastian Kolod-
ziejczyk to St. John’s & St. Gabriel’s Par-
ishes. Father Sebastian is a LaCrosse Dioce-san Priest who is the director of Casa Hogan
Juan Pablo II in Lurin-Lima, Peru. Casa
Hogar Juan Pablo is an orphanage for aban-
doned children. His orphanage’s goal goes
beyond providing the basic needs of food and
shelter. Casa Hogar’s purpose is not to live and work amongst the poor in poverty, but
rather to teach them skills and provide op-
portunities to them so that they may rise
above their hardships and live lives of dig-
nity. Please be as generous as you can be to Fr. Sebastian’s mission.

Value of one vote that changed world history: It was by one vote that in
1923 Adolph Hitler became the leader of the Nazi
party which later resulted in the slaughter of six
million Jews. Had it not been for one vote, World
War II with all its pain and death might never have
taken place. Had it not been for one vote in 1776,
the official language in the United States would be
German instead of English. Had it not been for one
vote in 1845, the state of Texas would not become
part of the United States. Had it not been for one
vote in 1868, Andrew Johnson would have been
impeached as the president of the United States.
Had it not been for the one electoral vote in 1876,
Rutherford B. Hayes would not have been elected
president of the United States. One vote per pre-
cinct would have elected Richard Nixon rather than
John Kennedy to the presidency in 1960. One vote
by Al Gore in 1993 approved the larges tax increase
in U.S. history. One vote gave Oliver Cromwell con-
trol of all England in 1645. One Vote caused King
Charles I of England to be executed in 1649 in Ger-
many. One vote changed the entire nation of
France from a monarchy to a republic in 1875.
These events clearly show that our exercise of the
right to vote can make a tremendous difference.
When we use our right to vote we are giving our
dues to Caesar as Jesus commanded.
As the faithful citizen where is my one vote?
