From the Pastor’s Keyboard… “NOLA”
August 29, 2015 was the date of our Fall Picnic. A fun time was had by all, as we worked together,
played together, ate together, and listened to some great music together. Quilts were sold, ice cream
was eaten, and all had a good time. It was a great day of Bem Church Family Fun.
August 29, 2015 was also another important date- one that was almost overlooked. It was the 10th
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina; the storm that ravaged New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA) and many
other cities on the gulf coast. Biloxi, Mississippi, was another town devastated; and an important
UCC institution, Back Bay Mission, was totally destroyed.
Today, if you were to visit Back Bay Mission, you would find a different scene. Many new buildings
have been constructed since the 2005 devastation; new programs have been instituted; and a new life
and sense of mission is present. The community has rebuilt, with a focused vision as their guide. In
2009 the new campus was dedicated, and their mission work has grown ever since. Ten years later,
looking back on the devastation brought on by Katrina, this mission has come a long way. In fact,
some may even argue that they are better off now than they were before.
In our lives, there are often times of Katrina-like destruction. People betray us, loved ones die, jobs
end, fire destroys and families quarrel. Sometimes it is the changes life brings us that leave us feeling as
empty and barren as the campus of Back Bay Mission must have felt on August 30, 2005.
The lesson of Katrina, a lesson that is repeated over and over again in the Bible, is that if we have faith,
and a vision of who God calls us to be, we can always rebuild. We can emerge from even the most
desolate times in our lives and build a new understanding of who we are and to whom we belong. We
can always rededicate ourselves, refocus on God, and become better than we were before. This is our
call, this is our promise, this is our identity as God’s children.
No matter who you are, or what hurricanes blow through your life, You belong to God; and trusting on
the Promises of God, you can always rebuild, refocus, and renew. This week, say a prayer of
Thanksgiving for the work of Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, MS; and for all who are working towards
renewal. -Pastor Rick

OUR CHURCH’S WIDER MISSION- CHANGING LIVES IN NOLA
Written by Anthony Moujaes on www.ucc.org/news (edited)
Lives along the Gulf Coast changed forever on August 29, 2005. Ripping through the region, Hurricane
Katrina made landfall that day in Southeast Louisiana, and swept away houses and cars while floodwaters
lingered for weeks from Texas to Florida. One of the most deadly hurricanes in United States history and
the most destructive, Katrina claimed 1,833 lives and caused about $108 billion in total property damage,
while displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Now, at the 10-year anniversary of the storm, people
across the United Church of Christ are recalling the harrowing tales of grief, survival and recovery — and
how rebuilding and renewal was made possible by the entire denomination.
Thanks to more than $6.1 million in gifts for hurricane response, an amount that the Rev. Mary Schaller
Blaufuss labeled a "huge outpouring", the church remained engaged in the recovery effort, aiding the Gulf
Coast through the end of 2011 — past its commitment of five years.
"Our financial generosity was outstanding, even being a small church in the big picture, and it reinforced
long-term recovery," said Blaufuss, team leader for the UCC Global Sharing of Resources, the ministry
team that responds to natural disasters. A majority of the funds went toward rebuilding of homes, and also
supported things like local food banks, initial cost of repair to local churches, cost for long-term
volunteers and legal assistance.
Through UCC missions more than 6,750 people volunteered for the recovery effort in New Orleans alone,
working a total of 170,000 hours to clean out almost 850 houses and rebuild 110 homes. Blaufuss has
made more than a dozen visits to the region in her capacity working with disaster recovery volunteers. For
the first two years after Katrina, she visited the area "about every month or two."
"We were able to participate closely in the recovery of both areas, alongside Back Bay Mission in the
Gulf Coast, and in New Orleans, where we helped set up some recovery work there," Blaufuss said. "We
had volunteer groups in both places."
Back Bay Mission, a UCC ministry in Biloxi, Miss., serves the poor and marginalized in the Gulf Coast.
"Back Bay Mission had community relationships and transitioned easily into housing recovery," Blaufuss
said. "But in New Orleans, we had to build those relationships from scratch. Thankfully, were able to
involve our local churches — they hosted weekly meals for volunteer groups — and it was wonderful
hospitality and a time for local congregants to tell their stories of survival."
In Mississippi, before Back Bay Mission could begin assisting the relief and recovery effort, it had to
assess the destruction to its own campus, with seven of eight buildings destroyed and un-usable.
"Immediately after the hurricane, we had nothing at all. Our campus had been entirely destroyed," said
Chris Marlin-Warfield, church relations associate for Back Bay Mission. "Only one building was
salvageable and everything else had to be knocked down. Within that, we had people coming in for
mission trips in the coming weeks and now we had no place to put them, so we worked on managing that
aspect, and figuring out where they could work."
About 7,500 volunteers worked 240,000 hours, cleaning up both the campus and more than 150 homes in
the five years after the storm. It provided Back Bay with a new focus, shaping a ministry to launch
affordable housing initiatives to meet the needs of the community.
A decade later after Katrina, what are the lessons learned from the aftermath of the storm? Said Blaufuss,
"It reinforced our commitment to local communities in helping them decide how they should recover, and
listening to local voices so the outsiders can best assist in the recovery. It reminded us of the importance
of relationships."
(UCC Mission work in NOLA was made possible by contributions to OCWM)

SUNDAY SCHOOL- MAKE IT MATTER THIS YEAR! Over the past few years, as our cultural priorities have shifted, our children have lost out on something
special that was the bedrock of our upbringing- a consistent Sunday School education and the foundation
of faith that provides. The Bem Church Christian Education Committee has been working to put together
a program that will provide your child with the tools they need to build a beneficial relationship with God.
There is one thing missing- your child! This academic year, make it a priority to bring them to Sunday
School each week. We will have two primary classes: Pre-K through 2nd
grade, and 3-5 grade, as well as
one class for Middle and Senior High (6-12 grade) and an adult class. 9:00 is the time to get here on
Sundays for this great fall program! It all starts with Rally Day on September 13.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL IN SOFA ROOM Beginning September 20, a new Adult Sunday School Class will be meeting in the Sofa Room each
Sunday morning around 9:10 or so; casual discussion about issues of faith over coffee (and maybe
sometimes donuts). Topics will center around concerns of the gathered class members, and focus on
Biblical application. What does the Bible have to say to us today, and how can we utilize this Wisdom in
our lives? Come and be part of the discussion!
TRIP TO GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH- OCTOBER 2 Pastor Rick is organizing a trip to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on Manchester Road in St. Louis
on Friday, October 2. We will meet at church at 9:00am (leave by 9:30) and travel (in a rented van) to the
church. We will have a Greek Lunch there around 11:15 or so and then tour the Sanctuary, hearing about
the Greek Orthodox Faith from one of the priests in residence. We will return home by 3:00pm. Costs
will be minimal, basically the expense of your lunch and the van rental divided by the number going. If
you are interested in going on this fun, faith-filled field trip, talk to Pastor Rick!

CROP WALK- SEPTEMBER MISSION Indonesia- Aras Mendrofa used to be listless and often fell sick. Today, however, after multivitamins and
mineral supplements supplied by a Church World Services program, the 11-month old is active, has a
good appetite, and is at his ideal weight of 21 pounds.
Cambodia- While 1 in 6 people in the world don't have safe drinking water, in Cambodia those odds are
getting better thanks to Church World Services. They are providing the most appropriate, sustainable
solutions helps us to win the battle against waterborne diseases that cause diarrhea, the leading cause of
death for children in developing countries under the age of 5.
Vietnam- Nguyen Thi Tan is a rural villager who has learned innovative techniques to provide his family
with clean water. Now, thanks to Church World Services programs, instead of having unsafe drinking
water, their drinking water is clean and separated from household wastewater. Once black with pollution,
"the color of the water is much better," says Nguyen.
Kenya- Jennifer Sindiri joined a literacy class sponsored by Church World Services. Not only did the
mother of four learn to read and write, she developed business skills that helped her find a way to feed her
family- sustainably. She credits Church World Services with changing the lives of whole communities
through this program and "empowering me to be where I am."
Moldova- Church World Services helped Marcos and his brother Kosta have more food to eat for the
long term. Their family received a grant that helped them purchase chickens, which their father has
turned into their community's leading poultry supply despite economic depression.
Burkina Faso- Drought in this area means nearly 16 million people don't have enough food to eat or
water to drink. The Church World Services response teams help communities have emergency supplies
of food for today's needs, and the tools to handle future crises, such as drought- resistant varieties of crops
and resilient water supplies.
Serbia- This section of Europe experienced such gripping cold in 2012 that more than 800 people died.
Church World Services responded with blankets and other emergency aid. They work with the region's
most vulnerable people, supporting children's programs so they can build better lives for themselves
tomorrow, and live safely today.
Kentucky (USA)- When violent storms ravaged much of the US, Church World Services provided
cleanup buckets, blankets, tools and other kits to provide aid. Church World Services emergency
response specialists helped communities plan, fund and manage their own recovery, focusing on the most
vulnerable and least likely to receive other help.
In 2014, caring people in 2000 communities around the US joined together in 1434 CROP Hunger Walks
and similar events to help the work of Church World Services. Together, we raised $13.4 Million to help
end hunger around the world. 25% of the funds raised are kept local, shared with food pantries, soup
kitchens, community gardens and other hunger-fighting programs. (find out more at www.cropwalk.org)
The CROP Walk is the Bem Church Mission of the Month for September. We will be distributing
envelopes in worship all month long, signing people up for CROP. Pick up your envelope next Sunday,
and line up your supporters- walk for CROP!
Don’t want to walk? Come to the CROP Walk and Rock! There will be Rocking Chairs available for
CROP Rockers. Or, make a donation to a Bem Church CROP Walker to help support the cause.
