FASTING & ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS
FOR LENT
Ash Wednesday & Good Friday; are days of fast and abstinence.
Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together
they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including
milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously
affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest
should be consulted.
Fasting almsgiving. and prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens
should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance, and of preparation for baptism or of
renewal of baptism at Easter.
What do St. Pope John Paul II, Blessed Mother Teresa, St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Louis de Montfort all have in common? Come learn in
everyday language how consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary helped each of these saintly figures get closer to Jesus, and how it can
help each of us as well.
Please join us for a 6-week retreat in preparation for Marian Consecration, starting Monday, Feb. 16 from 7 pm to 8:30 pm.
St. Louis de Montfort wrote that the Marian Consecration is “a smooth, short, perfect and sure way of attaining union
with our Lord.”
WHAT: 33 Days to Morning Glory is a six-week retreat that meets once a week; an incredible journey that we will take together. It’s called a retreat because it provides an opportunity for reflection. We begin with the Immaculate Heart of Mary and preparation for Marian Consecration because she leads us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to holiness.
The 33 Days to Morning Glory book and the accompanying Retreat Companion provide an inspirational format for reflection, discussion, and learning. Each week you will have 90 minute meetings broken into three parts:
• 15 minute large group opening with a six minute introduction talk on DVD • 45 minute small group sharing that draws from the daily questions in the Retreat Companion • 30 minute talk by Father Michael Gaitley on DVD that illustrates the key points of each week and keeps
them simple and livable. • Consecration Mass on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, Feast of the Annunciation (time to be determined)
WHERE: St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 2555 NE Savanna Road, Jensen Beach, FL 34957 Tuscany Banquet Room in San Mart’Inn. Join us Wednesdays, at 6:30PM in the Parish Hall for this amazing study of God’s
chosen people. Through this study we will travel with the Israelites from their
preparation to enter the Promised Land to their return from exile. We will learn, like
the Israelites, what it means to be “God’s people”.
What others are saying about the study. . .
“The study provides a powerful
combination of sound,
up-to-date Catholic Bible scholarship and
effective use of
the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the
wisdom of the
Saints and a consistent depth of insight in

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AND RCIA
Many people’s eyes tend to glaze over when the topic of Catholic social teaching is mentioned. It sounds like it deals with “big issues” that only politicians and popes can influence—things like poverty, injustice, human rights, etc. In truth, Catholic social teaching isn’t a lot of complicated instructions presented in complex theological terms to be debated among scholars. It is, or should be, the real-life expression of our fundamental beliefs as Catholics. It is the way we act every day in our families, our places of work, our communities, and ultimately in the entire world. Join us as we take a closer look at Catholic Social Teaching. Everyone is welcome, so don't forget to invite a friend or two! Sundays: Fellowship and Continental breakfast at 10am followed by instruction at 10:30am. Registration is FREE — call Agnes Mulligan 772-214-7460 or visit www.Stmartindp.com. For more information contact Susie Bobko at (772) 285-6251 or email sbobko@att.net.
Only the Gardener
“How afflicted our poor heart is when it is abandoned, as it were, by love, looks everywhere for it, and seems to find it nowhere. It doesn’t find it in the external senses, for they are incapable of it; nor in the imagination, which is cruelly tormented by diverse impressions; nor in reason, which is troubled by a thousand obscure arguments and strange fears.” St. Francis de Sales Every time we recite the Nicene Creed, we say “His kingdom will have no end.” These words point to the world to come more than the world we live in. But they also indicate the faith and love that must lead us. Pope Benedict XVI explained it this way: “. . . this unique kingdom is not built on worldly power, but is founded on faith and love alone. It is the
great force of hope in the midst of a world that so often seems abandoned by God.”
So, even our former Pope recognized the sense of abandonment we sometimes feel from God and therefore from Love. And yet, we all seem to experience a monumental longing for the greater love which we are taught is God. We are also taught that God loves us to an infinite degree. For many, it is a love that is difficult to comprehend and grasp. It is our nature to seek something tangible as a proof. Every year as Valentine’s Day approaches, we see and hear ubiquitous advertising with the resounding message, “Show her you love her!” Sometimes I talk back to the commercials and say, “I’ve been showing her for over three decades, I think she gets it by now!” But I love my wife deeply, so I buy flowers anyway, just because I know she likes them. I had a thought that God could easily express a similar sentiment toward me. “I’ve been showing you for over five decades! Why don’t you get it by now? I’ve given you the love of a wife, and the love of three children, and the love of four grandchildren. I’ve given you the love of family and friends. And I’ve given you my only begotten son.” I thought of Jesus on the Cross. What could be more tangible? Why is love so difficult for us to see? “It sees it without seeing it, encounters it without recognizing it, as if it were in a dream and in imagination. Thus when Magdalene encountered her dear Master, she received no comfort from Him because she thought that it was not He but only the gardener.” St. Francis de Sales As we cling to our faith and live in hope, He is “only the gardener” for a time. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: As a Valentine’s Day rose gradually opens to its full magnificence, we patiently wait as God’s love unfolds in us and before us.
