From the Collar Itsohappensthatthisyear theFirstSundayofLent falls
onValentine’sDay.Both are aboutwhowe are, howwewant to be in relation to others, and the importance ofpersonal encounter for our very well being. In today’sgospel, theencounterofJesuswiththe devilparallelsourownencounterswith the devil.Noneof us, not even theGod-Man, is exempt from temptation. By resisting thedevil’s temptations to act as the Son of God, Jesus fullyembraces his human identity. Jesus facing temptationwitnesses to how fully he identi ieswithwhowe are ashumanbeings. By resisting thedevil’s temptations to actagainstwho God created us to be,we fully embrace ourownhumanidentity:graced beings created in the image of God. Jesus chooses not to misuse his divine power, takingup themission forwhichhewassent.Hewasnotsenttolorditoverus, buttousehisdivinepowertoleadus tosavingwholenessandwell‐being.Wechoosenot toact against the divine Life God has bestowed upon us,taking up the mission on which we have been sent. Wecontinue Jesus’ saving ministry, reaching out to otherswith the Good News that God is forgiving and merciful, ever calling us to deeper relationship. Temptation is anoccasion for showing thatour livesare turned toGod, inwhom we ind our very identity and being. Like Jesus, temptationsandourveryresistancetothemstrengthenusinourchoicesforgoodnessandholiness.Inmakingthesechoiceswe are continually choosingwhowewant to be:thosewhofaithfullyserveGodbydoinggoodforothers—this is our life’s mission. Temptations’ lure to self-satisfaction is overcome by an even stronger lure: growth in holiness and transformation into being ever more beloved sons and daughters of God. Fr. Jace
REJOICE AND BE GLAD
JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, astoday’sGospelremindsus.Tryaself‐servingmiracle.Trysellingout.Trydazzlingtheaudience;peoplearegullible,afterall.Tryalltheseeasyways.Thetemptertries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attemptsthe old soft‐soap, the snake‐oil solutions that arealwaysreadilyathand.Thedevilknowsbetter,butispowerlesstodobetter,muchlessbebetter.Thedevilis evil personi ied,who senses in Jesus the stronger, trulyattractivepresenceofholiness. Evil is exposed and engaged,we are reminded inthis Sunday’s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. Theundoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up theworkofsoul‐healingandworld‐healing.ThisLent, theChurch invites us to enter into this renewing,re‐creativeworkandbemadewholeagain.
