Diocese of San Bernardino Office of the Bishop
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My heart is heavy with the tragic acts of violence and loss of life that have
transpired in our country over the past eight days, beginning in our state in Gilroy on July 28 and culminating with the incidents in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio
on Sunday.
I am praying for the eternal rest of all those who died in these horrific shootings, and for their loved ones who are left to cope with such painful loss. Our faith calls us, in whatever way we can, to walk with these communities and to share in their
sense of grief. May God comfort and console them in this dark valley.
In these moments we again ask ourselves difficult questions: why would someone resort to such acts of violence and hatred? What is happening to our society that this is becoming more and more common? As a Catholic, how am I
to respond to this?
The answers are not easy, but it is important that we confront these questions and pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us in our response.
The Lord Jesus teaches us that every human life is precious and dignified in
God’s eyes. His earthly ministry gave us a model of sacrifice so that others may continue in life and the path to salvation. This calls us to a life of non-violence
and love of our neighbor.
If ever there was a time for us to return to that fundamental idea of our Christian faith, it is right now.
May God bless you and yours, and let us pray for one another.
In Christ,
Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

Healing Broken Hearts-One Weekend at a Time. Helen Keller once said: “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you, shall form an invincible host against difficul-ties.” Sometimes situations and decisions from the past can make us feel disconnected and alone. If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Eng-lish-speaking Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat Sep-tember 6-8, 2019. It’s an opportunity for women and men to experience God’s love and mercy as He touch-es each wound with his healing grace. Lives are re-stored and peace is found. Participation is strictly con-fidential. For more information, please contact Mary Huber at 909-475-5353 or visit the website Rachelsvineyard.org.
Coming Up!
If you are considering full initiation in the Cath-olic faith, or, if you have already been baptized Catholic, and would like to complete the sacra-ments of initiation as an adult, our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program here at St. Matthew can assist you in this process. (For unbaptized youth ages 7+ please contact the RE Office for assistance.) Our first session takes place on
Thursday, September 26 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Cen-ter. We have scheduled 16 class sessions as well as additional rites throughout the year, to culminate in initiation at the Easter Vigil for those who are not baptized or who are baptized in another faith. Those baptized Catholics who are preparing for Eucharist and or Confirmation attend classes also, but sacra-ments are scheduled on separate dates to be announced. You may register in the parish office. Please call the RE office (951) 272-3521 for more information. EWTN CATHOLIC NETWORK

Y a amar a nuestro prójimo.
donde hay odio, déjame sembrar amor;
Donde haya dolor, perdón;
donde hay duda, fe;
donde hay desesperación, esperanza;
donde hay oscuridad, luz;
Dónde hay tristeza, alegría. - San Francisco -
