STAY ALERT, STAY SAFE----6 Tips to reduce your chances

of falling asleep behind the wheels----

Drowsy driving can impair your driving skills, which can lead to disastrous consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 56,000 crashes happen annually as a result of driver drowsiness/fatigue, with around 40,000 nonfatal injuries and 1,550 deaths. To reduce the chances of falling asleep behind the wheels, follow these rules to stay alert and safe on the road.

Introduction

Get enough rest at night

Drivers who sleep only 6 to 7 hours a day are twice likely to get into an accident in comparison to the ones who get at least 8. The record is even worse for those who sleep for 5 hours or less. Hence, it’s advisable to get at least 8 hours of sleep at night to balance the books.

Take a break

Feeling tired, bored or restless? Pull over immediately; you need a break. Pull over to a rest stop, stretch and take a short nap. It’s advisable to take a break after every two hours.

Wear sunglasses

Bright sunlight can cause you to squint, making your eyes tired over time. Hence, it’s advisable to wear sunglasses during the day.

Adjust car settings

Stay more alert by keeping the temperature inside the car cool, playing loud and high-energy music, turning off cruise control, and placing your seat back in an upright position.

Watch what you eat

Opt for high protein foods. Caffeine and sugar don’t always ensure mental alertness. Instead, opt for water or juice. This practice can help you a lot in the long run.

DO NOT tailgate

Maintain at least a 5-second distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Do not tailgate in any way whatsoever. It’s a whole lot more safer than the conventional driving practices.
