By the time you read this article, Ash Wednesday
will be upon us and the reflective time of Lent will
begin. This is a time to think of God and what God
has sacrificed for us. I wonder deeply at the reason
why God has spent so much energy in attempting to
get our attention. I say it this way because it seems
there are so many distractions in the world, so
many things which take up our time rather than
God. So, I ask you to think of all of the wonderful
things you experience in your life and take a mo-
ment, perhaps a minute or two, or maybe….join the
Lenten Bible Study starting February 15th, called
God is Closer Than You Think...well, you get the
point. God just wants, desires, our response: to say
yes in the continual nod of your head; wherever you
may be or whatever you may be doing. Just say
Thank You, God.
Blessings, Steve

SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP NEWS!
Senior High youth group is back into the swing of things for 2016! We started the year off by "Counting
our Blessings" discussing the many things in our lives which we are thankful for. Each student made a
"thankful" jar in which our many blessings can be added to weekly and then read at the end of the
year. We've also had game night as we watched the football playoffs together.
First semester found eight to ten youth spending time in fellowship, food and fun each month. These
youth are extremely busy in school, sports, music and other activities throughout the year so it's
always fun to hear what is going on in their busy lives.
We enjoyed our annual movie study, which was based on the movie "The Good Lie". This movie tells
the story of children orphaned by the civil war in South Sudan, who come to the USA as refugees. We
had some great discussions each week.
We enjoyed a trip to the movies to see The War Room. Dale and Karil hosted a hay rack/bonfire for us
and we also took a trip to Sunny Side Pumpkin Patch in October with the three exchange students at
SVHS as our guests. Christmas is always fun as we shop for angels from the Angel Tree. Unfortunately
due to schedules this year we were unable to go caroling, which has always been a fun event for us.
Super Bowl of Caring is coming up on February 7. We will once again be collecting canned goods/cash
for the McPherson County Food Bank.
Plans are underway for our summer mission trip to Denver, CO. This is always an exciting and re-
warding time for all of us! We especially look forward to the trip this summer since we were not able
to go on a mission trip last summer.

Children’s Sunday School News
What’s going on downstairs in the children’s Sunday school classroom? Lots of fun
stuff! We just finished up learning about the Old Testament and are now starting on
the New Testament. Some of the kiddos favorite lessons were Ezekiel—the valley of
the dry bones and Jonah and the big fish. They enjoyed fun snacks to help them
remember the lessons like “bones” made from pretzel sticks and mini marshmallows
dipped in white chocolate, and blue Jello with Swedish fish swimming around. The also
took their picture inside the belly of the big fish that we have displayed in the
classroom. Watch for the pictures on one of the bulletin boards!
We have also incorporated some other fun things such as a treasure chest and prayer
board. The treasure chest is to encourage the kiddos to invite friends to Sunday
school. When they bring someone, both children get to pick something out of the
treasure chest. The prayer board was a hit right away. The kiddos are encouraged to
pin any concerns or worries they have on the board so we can pray about them at the
end of class. We also have a blessings board they can write on to help remind us of the
things that God has blessed us with.
I would like to say thank you to the families for giving Sarah and I the opportunity to
teach your kiddos about the Bible. It’s such a joy to see them get excited about these
Bible lessons, and listen to them tell us how they can apply these to their daily lives.

Noisy Offering—Sunday, February 28th
Save your change for the month of February and bring it to church on
Sunday, February 28 to contribute to our "Noisy Offering" which will be collected the
last Sunday of February separate from our regular offering. The youth and children of
the church will go into the congregation with a can to collect loose change. When
they have collected all the change, they will return to the front of the church and empty
their cans into a large metal pan. This makes a very loud and joyous noise! The
Noisy Offering money for February will go towards our tithe to our Ministry and
Missions tithe.
Trustee's meeting, on Jan. 25th, there was discussion about getting bids to re-
place the carpet that was damaged in the Eklund room and front hallway from the
sewer back up during Hyllingsfest. The church has received a check from insurance to
cover the cost.
Mark Flynn installed a much needed new water heater and fixed all toilets upstairs.
Trustees will be in charge of the March 2nd Fellowship meal.
Something to put on your calendars, on March 12th and/or 19th there will be a
much needed church work day(s)! PLEASE consider coming to help on either or both
days in order to get our church ready for Easter!!!!
"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the
places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you can."
