News from the President
I am happy to announce that our collective bargaining
agreements for GardaWorld, Paladin, and Securitas have been
printed and are included with your newsletter. Please take
your time in reviewing it as it is important to be familiar with
your rights and responsibilities regarding your employment.
Please note the minimum basic wage in our collective
agreement is $14.17 right now, and as of July 1st 2019, will go
to $14.26.
Labour Day is coming, so please save the date, and come out to our events in
Toronto or Mississauga for family friendly fun.
In preparation for the Federal election in October, the District is putting on
election schools. We encourage all those interested in working on an NDP election
campaign to sign up and get hands on experience in this dynamic course.
We encourage members to come out and participate in our union at a
variety of events to grow solidarity. Please take a look inside for upcoming events,
courses, and leadership opportunities.
Our members have taken part in a number of events in our community, and
we would like you to join us. We participated in the Day of Mourning in honour of
workers with workplace illnesses or who have died on the job. We also organized a
basketball event for members to meet, and network while having fun and keeping
fit.
As always, if you have any issues, or need assistance, do not hesitate to
contact me or your Local Union representative.

Steelworker’s Injured Workers Program
In case of a work related injury, here are some suggested actions that if followed will result in a better outcome for the injured worker. • Report every injury immediately to your supervisor. Make note of any witnesses. • Ensure that a report or notation is made by you about a first aid you receive, noting
the time of day, the date, the work location where the injury occurred and the • nature of the injury. • Seek immediate medical attention from your own doctor, a hospital or clinic for all
injuries that are not minor injuries. Your employer must pay for your transportation to your Doctor, or hospital or clinic within a reasonable distance of your employer.
• Ensure that your employer files a Form 7 within three days of your injury occurring. • Ensure you call the WSIB at (416) 344-1000 or 1-(800) 387-0750, for claim status or
to provide information. • Request a Form 6 (from WSIB-can also complete it online) a Form 8 (to be filled by
your doctor/hospital) and form 7 from your employer. • Have your doctor file a Functional Abilities Form (FAF) for an Early and Safe Return
to Work whenever your employer requests a copy. • Call the Injured Workers Program at (905) 629-4991 Ext. 228 if you require assistance with any aspect of your claim.

Summer Safety Tips
Summer is one of the most exciting seasons for Canadians. We can get active with family, friends and in the community. It is also a season to be cautious of heat related illnesses. As you work around the clock and under different conditions, it is critical that you use good judgement to protect yourself and the people around you. The following tips are some of the guidelines that can be utilized to ensure safety while fulfilling one’s work duties. • Pay attention to heat exhaustion such as nausea, dizziness, headache, blurred
vision and unusual skin disorientation
• Watch for signs of heat stroke such as chills, restlessness, convulsions, rapid
breathing, red or dry skin and fainting
• Stay cool in the heat through drinking plenty of water, avoiding direct sunlight
and reducing caffeine consumption
• Avoid sitting inside a parked vehicle under direct sunlight for long period of time;
Keep the windows down whenever required even if that is a brief stay
• Wear appropriate attire such as sunglasses to protects eyes from fatigue and hats
to prevent direct exposure to sunlight
• Adapt to a suitable diet to manage extreme heat conditions such as fruit, low
carbohydrate foods and less spice consumption between 11 am to 3 pm
• Have open dialogue with your supervisor or manager on summer safety
measures in relation to your site and any expectations of you while on duty
