INTRODUCTION

Universal serial bus (USB) ports are the standardconnection for a variety of electronic peripherals, fromprinters and digital cameras to flash drives and scanners.

Implemented to provide a replacement for legacy ports tomake the addition of peripheral devices quick and easier for user.

The latest version of USB is named as USB 3.0 or SUPERSPEED USB.

Provides an expandable, fast, bi-directional, low costserial hardware interface.

HISTORY

There have been three versions released prior to 3.0

USB 1.0 in January 1996 ± data rates of 1.5 Mbps and 12

Mbps

USB 1.1 in September 1998 ± first widely used version of

USB

USB 2.0 in April 2000-Major feature revision was the

addition of a high speed transfer rate of 480 Mbps

USB 3.0 NOW

It was developed on Nov 17,2008

It is also called as SUPERSPEED technology

Why The Upgrade ??

Mainly the need for faster transfer rates in

devices such as hard drives, flash card

readers, and DVD, Blu-ray, and HD DVD

optical drives User applications demanding a higher

performance connection between the PC and

peripherals Need for greater energy efficiency in today¶s

³greener world´

ARHCITECTURE

USB 3.0 utilizes a dual-bus architecture that

provides backward

compatibility with USB

2.0.It provides for

simultaneous operation of

Super Speed and non-

Super Speed information

exchanges

USB 3.0 is a physical Super Speed bus combined in

parallel with a physical USB 2.0 bus

It has similar architectual components as USB 2.0

USB 3.0 interconnect USB 3.0 devices

USB 3.0 host

USB 3.0 connectors AND cable goals

Deliver low cost connectors and cable

assemblies solutions to meet USB 3.0

architecture and performance needs.

Support 5Gbps data rate

Manage compatibility with USB 2.0

Comprehend ease-of-use aspects

USB 3.0 Standard A Connector

Same interface as the USB 2.0 Standard-A

Connector ,but with added pins for

Super Speed USB signals

Complete compatibility with USB 2.0

Standard-A connector  Double-stacked connectors supported

USB 3.0 Standard-B connector

Defined for relatively large, stationeryperipherals such as hard drives and printers

Visually different from USB 2.0 Standard-B

connector

USB 3.0 Micr o Connector Family

Defined for hand held devices Backward compatible with USB 2.0 Micro

connectors

Based on USB 2.0 Micro-B connector with an

extended portion for the Super Speed USB

signals

CABLE

Unshielded Twisted Pairs (UTP) cable usedfor USB 2.0 cannot be used for Superspeed

USB

Shielded differential pairs (SDP) twisted or

twinax is for SUPERSPEED USB

this is for singal integrity and EMI containment

CABLE LENGTH

USB 1.0 maximum cable length is 3 metres(9.8 ft)

USB 2.0 maximum cable length is 5 metres

(16 ft)

USB 3.0 cable assembly may be of any

length as long as all requirements defined inthe specification are met.

ADVANTAGES

Higher transfer rates ( upto 4.8Gbps)

Increased maximum bus power and

increased device current draw to better

accommodate power-hungry devices

New power management features

Full-duplex data transfers and support for

new transfer types

New connectors and cables for higher speeddata transfer...although they are backwards

compatible with USB 2.0 devices and

computers.

APPLICATION

USB is an important interface technology for vision applications

USB 3.0 has an opportunity to take over many applicationscurrently serviced by Camera Link

USB implements connections to storage devices using a set of standards called the USB mass storage device class

USB 3.0 also supports portable hard disk drives .The earlier versions were not supporting the 3.5 inch hard disk drives

High resolution webcams, video surveillance cameras

USB 3.0 vs.OTHER STANDARDS

FIREWIRE 1394 has a maximum data tranfer

rate of 800Mbps.

eS ATA has a maximum data transfer of

about 3.2Gbps

CONCLUSION

The universal serial bus 3.0 is supporting aspeed of about 5Gb/sec i.e. ten times faster

than the 2.0 version.

So hopefully by the help of this Superspeed

data tranfer rate the USB 3.0 will be replacing

many of the connectors in the future.
